Fifty-eight years ago this week, on August 2, 1943, Lt. John F. Kennedy got the jolt of his young life. As captain of the U.S. Navy motor torpedo boat, PT-109, he was cruising in the Pacific on a foggy night. Out of nowhere the Japanese destroyer Amigiri burst through the gray veil off the starboard side. The bow sliced the wooden boat in two, hurling its crew into the water. The first chapter of the JFK story was about to be written.
