Around Ireland: Kerryman gets to South Pole

The Irish Independent reports that Mike Barry, a father of three from Tralee, was among an international group of five that got to the Pole after a 51-day journey. They traveled on foot and on skis through snow, biting winds and temperatures as low as minus-41 Celcius.
Barry is the first Irishman to reach the South Pole. Sir Ernest Shackleton came nearest before this — he was within 90 miles when forced to turn back in 1909. Crean was on three major Antarctic expeditions: the Discovery (1901-04), the Terra Nova (1910-13) and the Endurance (1914-16), on which he was second officer to Shackleton.

Paul McGrath’s mercy dash last week to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital was halted when he was refused admission to see fanatical Manchester United supporter Brian Bellew, who lay in a coma following an assault, the Drogheda Independent reports.
In town for a supermarket opening, McGrath was brought to the hospital by a friend of Bellew, who thought that the former Irish international star could help pull him into consciousness. The hospital authorities believed otherwise.
Bellew was injured after an attack outside his home on Magdalene Street but the circumstances surrounding the incident are still unknown.
He had been due to appear in court this week as a witness in the trial of Michael Murphy, who is accused of the murder of Betina Poeschel in September 2001. However, garda
