Kerry defeated Louth in a tiebreaker to win their first Irish Intercounty Golf Tournament, held June 29 at the Links at Union Vale.
The winning group, who combined to shoot 367, included Dermot Leen, the captain, as well as Dan O’Connor, Liam O’Connor, Tim McCannon, Frank Gaynor and Jim Fleming.
Louth comprised Kevin Rogers, Ciaran Carr Sr., Ciaran Carr Jr., Tony Brady, Tom Fitzpatrick and Jim Byrne.
In all, 22 teams competed.
Kevin Rogers won the individual award with a net score of 68, with Pat McMorrow second at 69. Mike Shaw won low-gross honors with a 78. Closest-to-the-pin went to Noel Lennon, while Denis O’Dwyer won the long-drive competition.
Qualifiers for the Guinness Harp playoff competition were Mike Shaw (captain), Kevin Rogers, Pat McMorrow, John Hickey and John McMahon.

Connie Doolan, representing Guinness Bass, sponsor of the outing, presented the awards. The event was coordinated by Pat Hickey, chairman of the Interclub Committee; Sean McGuinness (M.C.); Syl Nugent, and Eddie Donohue, who supervised the handicaps.
Emerald Society
Mike Shawn fired a 73 to pace the field in the Emerald Golf Society’s monthly tournament, held Saturday at the Links at Union Vale.
Liam Gleeson (81) had the second low gross. John Foley (66) had the low net, followed by Mike Shaw (67), Martin Murphy (69) and Jim Molyneaux (70).
Bill O’Dea was closest to the pin on the third hole, with Molyneaux closest on 7, Murphy on 10 and Devere Reynolds on 12. John Foley’s 320-yard drive on 15 was the longest of the day.
The Emerald Classic will be held at the Links at Union Vale on Thursday, July 19, at 9 a.m. Prizes include round-trip tickets to Ireland. For details, call Reynolds at (914) 337-7130.
Cavan Tournament
Pat Whelan was the low-gross winner of the regular Cavan tournament, held Saturday at Split Rock. Barney Breen won the President’s Prize with 43 points. Whelan, Breen, Bill Carlson, John Geraghty and Frank Finnegan qualified for the Guinness Harp playoff competition.
15-and-Under Monthly
Jum Fleming’s 42-point performance was good enough to win the recent 15-and-Under monthly tournament at The Monster-Concord. Jim Fleming (38) was second, followed by Jeff Teasdale (37). Pat O’Toole and Fleming were closest to the pin, while Mike Shaw and John Foley had the longest drives.
Shamrock Weekly
Joe Pender won low-gross honors and tied with Martin Ross for low net (69) at the recent Shamrock weekly tournament at Middle Island. Gail Nelson had the longest drive on the second hole.
Rodney Arendsen outdueled Pat Cassidy on the fifth hole of a five-hole putting-contest playoff to win the two-day annual away weekend event at Harbor Pines and Sand Barrens. The two each finished with a 36-hole net of 140.
