Astoria 3-10, Kerry 0-3
Astoria and Kerry hooked up last week in the first round of the Junior B Championship. At a well-groomed Van Cortlandt Park, they renewed their rivalry which goes back eight years at this level. With player-manager Timmy Foley for Kerry and Cavan man Vivion White for Astoria putting two strong lineups out, the game started at helter-skelter pace. Sam Yore opened the scoring for Astoria and Derek McKenna added the second. Paddy Kearney went close at the other end before Foley pulled one back. Astoria extended their lead through Paul Bruen and then a great turn by Nestor Allen ended with another McKenna score. A good move by Andy Mahony and Sean Deacy went wide for Kerry before Foley scored his second, but the breaks were going Astoria’s way when Yore rattled the net.
The second half continued to be dominated by Astoria, Eddie O’Reilly added a goal while Mike Keane had a point. Thomas Noonan had a point for Kerry before McKenna put the game away for Astoria with goal number 3.
Best for Astoria on a day when everything went right were John Beirne and Conor Corbett at the back. Paul Bruen and Sam Yore gelled well at midfield while up front McKenna, Allen and Eddie O’Reilly were dominant all through. Kerry were well served by Adrian Riney and Paudie Hanley at the back. Foley and Paddy Kearney tried hard all through as did Alan Boyle.
