By Staff Reporter

The Astoria Gaels Gaelic footballers opened their season recently with 0-10 to 1-6 victory over Stamford at Van Cortlandt Park.

Astoria Gaels were the first to get on the scoreboard, with Mark Bourke getting his first of four points. Stamford then increased the pressure. The Gaels’ goalkeeper, Paul Burns, brought out two outstanding saves during the first half. Both teams then exchanged scores, with Sam McDonald and Paul Bruen both getting excellent points from 40 yards out.

In the second half, Stamford were awarded a dubious penalty, which Paul Burns could do nothing about. Astoria Gaels kept getting their points, with Sam McDonald getting a further brace of points and Gerry Coyle also getting on the scoreboard. Astoria ended up deserved winners and now look forward to their next match.
