Gaels, who were crowned Metro Div. 1 champions in the CSL last May, will be hoping to scout new players at the Soccer Resorts New York Classic tournament on Staten Island this Sunday, manager Niall Sugrue said last weekend.
“We looking forward to participating in the tournament. It’s a good opportunity to play teams outside the Cosmopolitan League,” Sugrue added.
A defender who at age 35 jokes that his best years are behind him, Sugrue said Gaels had not lost any players from last season.
Gaels’ expansion is necessary because clubs in the CSL’s First and Second Divisions are required to field reserve teams, unlike sides below the Metro division.
Gaels are one of 20 clubs that will participate in the New York Classic at Miller Field, a one-day eight-a-side tournament organized by former Shamrock player Niall Swann.
Gaels’ likely opponents in the event, whose winners will receive a $1,000 travel credit to the final Soccer Resort tournament of the summer in Las Vegas on Aug. 26-29, will include other Irish teams from the tri-state area.
There’s an entry by a group of Lansdowne Bhoys players. Irish side Beadling from the Metro Soccer League will also be represented, as will be The Cottage and New Jersey Celtic, the latter skippered by Kieran Hardy.
