Astoria Gaels in-house tourney

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

With training every Tuesday night a success during the intermission of the Cosmopolitan League, Manager Jimmy Ralph and Coach Mark Bourke added an interesting variation for the next five weeks. An in-house tournament between the squad, that will consist of round robin games, then semifinals and final. The winners will come away with trophies and T-shirts, plaques for the runners-up, plus top scorer award. The tourney started at full steam last Tuesday night.

With four teams each with a panel of six , competition was sometimes fierce and always tough on the first night. Captains Jimmy Ralph, Eugene Kyne, Derek McKenna and Donal Walsh were pushing squads all the way, as goal difference and position are important for semifinal pairings. McKenna’s team ended the first night with a 1-0-1 record, with Derek netting four goals and Rob Weiner two to set them up.

Walsh’s team also had one win and one loss with great displays by Niall Sugrue and Martin Reilly. Kyne’s team was the only one to start with two defeats, although Donal Moore and Kevin Nagle both pushed hard. When asked about this, Dave Clear said, "If we don’t improve, we won’t be able to show our faces in Cronin’s again." Ralph’s team came out with all guns blazing and wrapped up six points with two wins the second being a tough battle with McKenna’s squad. Both Ralph and McKenna got two minutes each for roughing in this one. the difference in the end two goals by the big Austrian Werner Lederer for Ralphs team.

Next Tuesday’s games promise to be just as exciting.

Astoria Gaels’ AGM will be held in McLoughlin’s Bar on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. All members are asked to attend and new members are always welcome.
