St. Barnabas took two from Rangers in a three-game New York Minor Board set at Paddy’s Field recently.
The most entertaining and skillful game of the afternoon, the U-12 contest, St. Barnabas edged Rangers 2-4 to 2-3. Rangers seemed to have this game in control, leading 2-2 to 0-1 as the half neared. But there was long ball out of defense by Joe Hallinan to Brian Burns, who made an inch-perfect ball to the inrushing Thomas Brady, who rocked the Ranger netting for a great goal.
In the second half, the Woodlawn boys kept up the pressure on the Ranger defense. A four-player movement involving Gerard Dunlevy, Brian Burns, Pat Hallinan, Thomas McGovern, whose defense splitting solo run of 30 yards before unleashing a pile driver to the back of the Ranger’s net. Fielding the kick-out McGovern kicked over a point, followed by another minor. Anthony Catabino closed out the scoring for St. Barnabas. Also excelling for them, Bobby Chambers 0-1, Gary Clancy and Danny Cotac.
Rangers best were Mike Wiez, Stephen Cassels 0-1, Pat Berna, Mike Durkin, Denis McGoldrick 1-1, Eamon Nugent 1-0, Mike O’Sullivan 0-1 and Ronan McGoldrick.
In a low-scoring under-18 game Denis McGoldrick got the only score to give Rangers a one-point victory over St. Barnabas. Both teams defended well, frequently closed off the path to goal. When the forwards did get through, they fluffed some great scoring chances, in particular Rangers. Inspirational for Rangers were Denis and Ronan McGoldrick, Brian Durkin, Colin Flynn, Matt Anderson, Pierce Cassels, Jason Brophy and Brian Twomey.
For St. Barnabas, goalkeeper Gerard Dunleavy, Brian McGovern, Thomas Neilus, Kevin Chambers, Mickey Butler, Liam Deane and Padraig McDaid excelled.
