Barnabas, Rockland teams turn up the heat

St. Barnabas and Rockland faced off in a four-game program on an absolutely perfect day for football.

Things started off with a bang as the Under-8 teams played to an exciting draw. The players on both teams showed great enthusiasm and there were many inspiring passages of football during the match.

The line outs were, for St. Barnabas: Michael O’Brien, Brendan Maher, Conor Corley, Mattie McEvoy, Nicky McGovern Daniel Murray, Danielle McGrade, Brendan Hynes, James Bennett, Adrian Wynne, Ashley Collery, Sean McEvoy, Mike Hannon, Mike Mahon, Sean Byrne, Harley Burke, Samuel Kingston, Conor Moran, Laura O’Sullivan and James O’Sullivan.

The Rockland team was, Paul Prendergast, Conor Gleeson, Aidan Noonan, Pat Guerin, Garvin Lee, Kieran Walsh, Pat Horgan, Kevin Duffy, Kyle Peterson, Mark O’Brien and Austin Hubber.

In U-10 action, St. Barnabas were the winners by a score of 6-3 to 0-3. The Woodlawn team was dominant from the onset and gave fine displays of teamwork and individual skills. Rockland battled bravely throughout.

Best for St. Barnabas were, Conor Hogan, Frankie McDermott, Liam Deane, Dione Norney, Thomas McWeeney and Jimmy McCormack. Rockland had fine displays from keeper Evan O’Brien, Tom O’Riordan, Ciaran Smith, Chris Relihan, Shane Durkin and Sean McKiernan.

St. Barnabas were again victorious in the U-12 match, 6-6 to 1-3, offering a brilliant exhibition of fluid Gaelic football. T.J. McDermott, Jack Hannon, Anthony Ciena and Shane Flanagan were the leading scorers for the Bronx team. At midfield, Pauric McDaid and Mickey Butler were superb, as were defenders Brian McGovern and Pat Hallinan.

Rockland, although outplayed, showed great spirit and were unlucky not to add to their final tally. They had star players in Martin Linnane, Danny McGrory, Declan White, Joe Cennaro, Brian O’Connor, Kevin Rocco and Mike Prendergast.

The U-14 match was Rockland’s opportunity to take the honors. They were the winners on a score line of 3-4 to 1-4. Both teams played flowing football and there were some well-taken scores by both teams.

Mike O’Sullivan, Nick Mangan, Emmet McGrade, Eric Ahern, Steven Spellman and, in the second half, defender John White excelled for Rockland. Among the best for St. Barnabas were Thomas McGovern, Gerard Dunleavy, Kevin Hallinan, Mickey Butler, Brian McGovern and Nikoletta Richey.

In U-10 competition at Paddy’s Field, Celtics defeated St. Raymond’s 2-3 to 0-1. Celtics’ outstanding players were Keith Lang, Aislin Gormally, and Paudie Koyne. St. Raymond’s top players were Shane Tierney, Thomas Manz and Steve DePompeis. Players of the match were Patrick Pierson of the Celtics and Kevin Brady of St. Raymond’s.

In a great under 12 match, Celtics were the winners by a score of 3-2 to 2-3. Celtics’ stars were Daniel Tierney, Brendan Gurrier, Kelly McArdle, Brian Curley, Michael Lang, Stephanie Tierney and Eamon Tierney. St. Raymond’s top players were Conor Bowden, Dennis Kilkenny, Thomas Enright, Stephen Lawless, Stephen Manz and Padraig O’Connor.

In U-10 action in Fairlawn, N.J., St. Joseph’s defeated the visiting St. Brendan’s team 4-6 to 1-3. The best for St. Joseph’s were Nisconi, Cullon, O’Shea and Quinn (no first names were given). St. Brendan’s best players were, Patrick Garvey, Sean O’Connell, Dylan Williams and Niall Croke. Players of the Match were Page from St. Joseph’s and Niall Harding from St. Brendan’s

At Woodbury Park, Monroe, N.Y., St. Brendan’s vs. St. Raymond’s, U-10 at 2:30 p.m. and U-12 at 3:30.
