February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Last year on Thanksgiving Day, John and Aileen Kelly, a brother and sister from County Offaly, were killed in a car accident while traveling in Huntington, Long Island.

John was a 21-year-old U.S. marine sergeant and Aileen, who was 16, was attending the Half Hollow Hills High School in Dix Hills. Both died on impact as did a friend traveling in the same car.

Their sister Caitriona was critically injured in the crash. She spent weeks in hospital undergoing surgery to repair internal injuries. She continues to recieve rehabilitation treatment at Glen Cove Hospital.

John and Aileen were buried in Ireland after a wake on Long Island.

After their devastating loss, the Kelly family set up a fund to defray the costs incurred during tragedy.

A benefit will be held on Sunday, May 7 at the Irish American Center, 297 Willis Avenue, Mineola, Long Island, New York. Six bands have donated their time to the event. For details and raffle tickets, call Pat Maloney at (718) 961-3568 or Pat Kelly at (718) 229-8837.
