Big-game bucks

RTE could earn as much as euro 1.6 million in advertising revenue from the three Irish World Cup games in Japan, according to media sources.

The state broadcaster will charge euro 20,000 for a 30 second ad slot during live coverage of the games. An extra euro 4,000 will get advertisers the top spot, the first ad during each commercial break.

According to a cost-per-viewer ratio, this price makes commercials more expensive than ad time during the U.S. Super Bowl. Audience viewing figures will be tough to gauge, as the first game, at 7:30 a.m. Irish time will see most viewers at home, whereas the other two games will be midweek during lunch hour and after.

If Ireland qualifies for the next round, analysts expect the euro 20,000 price to be hiked.
