Blue wall of sadness

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Hundreds of New York City police officers converged on the Bayridge section of Brooklyn last Wednesday for the funeral Mass of Patrick Brennan, the Mayo-born assistant police chief who died on Memorial Day weekend after struggling with cancer.

The day before he died, Brennan had been planning to return to Ireland for the first time since he immigrated in 1958.

In an elaborate ceremony that included a helicopter flyover and a piper’s send-off, Brennan was remembered not only as a police official but as a father, parishioner and a neighbor, whose loyalty to the community touched many people.
