Six games were decided at Dilboy Stadium on Sunday. Light rain halfway through the afternoon made the going a little slippery.

In the first game of the afternoon, two local teams from Brighton faced off with Tir na nOg coming out on top of Roscommon by a score of 4-8 to 1-2.

St. Pat’s win

The junior championship got underway with two first round games.

In game one, St. Pats had an easy win over Notre Dame with a score of 1-11 to 0-4.

St. Pat’s, with seven American-born players, took this game to Notre Dame from the start with Big Joe Morrissey winning at centerfield. He kept a good supply of ball to his forwards.

Shannon Blues lose

In the second junior game of the day, Donegal beat Shannon Blues by a score of 1-10 to 1-6.

Hurling

In senior hurling, Fr. Toms held out by the slimmest of margins over Cork by a score of 1-10 to 1-9.

Senior football

In the first senior football game, McAnespies beat St. Columbkilles 2-19 to 1-7.

For the Killes, this could have been labelled the Mickey Barber Show. He played his heart out and had two goals to show for it in the first half, one from a penalty.

But this game belonged to McAnespies.

Mayo are tops

In the last senior game of the day, Mayo looked very impressive over St. Pats by a score of 2-19 to 2-7.

The first half was close, 1-9 to 1-6. And when Gareth Golden took a 21-yard free after a foul on Mick Kearns, he sent it past Paddy Clarke and into the net to tie up the game.

Mayo came storming right back and scored 1-10 to just one point from Mickey Joe Hynes from a free.

Mayo now have four points from two games and top the table, but they have yet to be tested.
