Kerry 0-15, Wolfe Tones 2-8

Kerry remain on top of the leader board after four games with 8 points, but they made very hard work of their win over the Wolfe Tones on Sunday. Tones were first on the board after one minute of play by Noel McPhillips. Tony Murphy had Kerry’s first point a minute later. Six minutes went by before the next score, a point from a free by Mark O’Brien followed two minutes later with a point from a 50, again by O’Brien. Paul Meade had the Tones on the attack and a foul on McPhillips with resulting free making it a 3 to 2 game after 12 minutes.

It was all Kerry for the next 13 minutes with points from Mark O’Brien (2) Liam Og Higgins (1) and Mike O’Brien (1) Keith Doyle and Paul Meade had the Tones attacking again and sent Brendan Murray through for a lovely point. McPhillips had a point from a 21-yard free to make it 7 to 4, but Kerry would add points by Darren Lee and Mark O’Brien on the 28th and 29th minute to leave Kerry ahead at half time by 9 to 4.

Whatever good feelings Kerry had about this game were short-lived. Because the Tones had a goal and two points, inside of five minutes, thanks to McPhillips (1) Brendan Murray (1) and a penalty by Barry Allen. Neil Kelly up from the juniors was introduced after 7 minutes of play for the injured Tony Murphy. A point from a free by Mark O’Brien in the 10th minute helped to steady Kerry’s nerves. A debatable point was given to the Tones in the 15th minute. Both umpires signaled wide but changed their minds after consulting with the referee. A minute later the Tones took the lead on a line ball free by McPhillips. Mark O’Brien made it 10 to 1-7 with 10 minutes remaining Tom Morrissey sent Sean P. Sullivan through and he punched over a nice point. A minute later Brendan O’Brien sent over his first from play. Neil Kelly won a 50 for Kerry and Mark O’Brien made no mistake. but back again came the Tones.

With just a minute to go in regular time, Ray Butler and Keith Doyle sent Paul Made attacking and he found Brian McMahon, who stuck it in the Kerry net. Now it was 1-4 to 2-8, but Brian Murphy’s kick out found Pat Fenton, who sent a long ball to the Kerry forward resulting in a free for Kerry and Mark O’Brien did what he did so well all afternoon, sent it over the bar for a Kerry win.
