DUBLIN — Francie Barrett, the boxer from a traveler family in Galway who hit the headlines by qualifying for the Atlanta Olympics, has announced that he is turning professional.
Barrett, who was beaten in the lightweight semifinals of the Irish National championships last weekend, lost his chance of being selected for the Sydney games later this year.
"That’s it, there’s nothing left for me in amateur boxing," said the 24-year-old. I’ve definitely decided to turn professional."
Barrett carried the Irish flag at the opening ceremony in Atlanta and his exploits inspired an award winning documentary film entitled "Southpaw."
