Boyle on target as Rebels’ win

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Cork raced into an early lead as J.P. Boyle gave an exhibition of hitting points from placed balls as well as from a variety of distances and angles. In the opening half, Cork were in complete control as Alan Raftery and Rory Stafford were lording it in the middle of the field. Indeed Raftery was also being deployed as a very effective link between defense and attack. Midway in the period Cork led by 5 points to nil, and they should have been further ahead as they wasted numerous chances as Tyrone were besieged in their own half. Eventually Darren Petit lifted the siege as he picked up a ball at midway and along the sideline to muscle his way in for their first point. Midfielder McNabb followed with a strong run down the middle only to be fouled but Pat McGuire pointed the free. Cork went back on the attack but registered three wides before hitting three unanswered points. First Boyle was on target after an incisive run by Derek Courtney was halted with a foul. This score was quickly followed by a point by sub Colin Daly; the strapping former Dublin panelist is another fine acquisition for the Rebels. Donal Broderick sent over from long range while Aidan Power had Tyrone’s last point to leave the score at eight points to three in favor of Cork at the break.
The Rebels started the second half with Daly hitting the target again but McGuire replied with a point from a free for Tyrone. J.P. Boyle converted a “45” before Stafford fielded the resultant kick out and released the ball to Daly to finish to the net, leaving the score at 1-10 to 4 points with ten minutes gone. Tyrone, however, didn’t fold, despite the deficit and got three points back, courtesy of Downey, McNabb, and Power. Midway any chances of a more sustained comeback ended as Downey received a second yellow card while target man Petit went off injured. Cork finished in style with sharpshooter Boyle hitting two and Steven Gomez fisting over a point.
