A week earlier, Denis Donaldson, a friend of 1981 hunger-striker Bobby Sands and former confidante of the party leadership, was cleared of involvement in spying on the British government and political parties at Stormont.
After the police visited his Belfast home and told him his life was at risk because he was about to be exposed, he confessed his role, first to two leading party officials and then, publicly, in a television statement.
