Bronx Soccer Defending champs Harps lose to Lansdowne

This women’s league cup semi-final was a tight game, with the final score Lansdowne 1, Harps 0.

Lansdowne were soon on the attack. After seven minutes, Anne-Marie McGrail crossed the ball but it was well saved by Miriam Peters who failed to hold on to it and Liz McGrail was there to it into the Harps net, 1-0 to Lansdowne.

The Harps settled down and on 15 minutes Karen Shalvey crossed to Mary Beth Gazlay who turned the defender only to see her shot go inches wide. On 25 minutes, Lansdowne had a shot on goal but it was saved by Miriam Peters.

The score at half time was 1-0 to Lansdowne.

The second half started with Lansdowne going forward. A shot by Mary Beth Lynch went just over the bar.

On 47 minutes a cross from Bernie Boyle into the Harps box was handled, resulting in a penalty to Lansdowne. The shot was taken by Liz McGrail but brilliant save by Miriam Peters prevented the score.

Harps kept going forward. On 55 minutes, Sandra Swinburne had a shot well saved by Andrea Lehzia.

On 65 minutes, a cross into the Lansdowne box by Teresa Brink was handled by Lansdowne defense. The penalty was taken by Sandra Swinburne but it was well saved by Andrea Lehzia. The Harps kept going forward but failed to score and Lansdowne held out for the upset.

Best for Lansdowne: Liz McGrail, Andrea Lehzia, Mary Beth Lynch.

Best for Harps: Miriam Peters, Karen Shalvey, Mary Beth Gazlay.

Béal Bocht 5, Velocity 1

The scoreline in this game does not reflect the way the game was played. After ten minutes, Béal Bocht got a penalty for a foul in the box. Jeanine Rynne took the penalty which was well saved by Kim Hilbrick.

Velocity went forward and on 18 minutes Duffy Connolly had a shot on goal well saved by Pauline Boylan. Then, on 20 minutes, a cross by Brenda Walsh into the Velocity box was handled, and the resultant penalty taken by Mary McEvoy who scored, 1-0 to Béal Bocht.

Velocity went forward with shots by Duffy Connolly and Julia Stiles going inches wide. On 30 minutes, Sophia Harvey crossed the ball to Pat Thelwell who took it down and scored, leaving the halftime score 2-0 to Béal Bocht.

The second half started with Velocity going forward and on 40 minutes Laura Rizzo took a shot from 25 yards but it went inches over the bar.

With Velocity putting pressure on Béal Bocht, the Bocht were awarded a penalty on 50 minutes for handball in box. Regina Nejman took the penalty and put keeper wrong way, 2-1 to Béal Bocht.

Béal Bocht took control of the game. On 58 minutes Sophia Harvey went through the Velocity defense and scored 3-1.

On 63 minutes, Sophia Harvey gathered a cross, and turned and scored 4-1 to Béal Bocht. On 63 minutes Béal Bocht went forward. A cross by Varina Carey was met by Barbara James who turned and scored, 5-1 to Béal Bocht, which was the final score.

Best for Béal Bocht: Siobhan Brennan, Sophia Harvey, Pat Thelwell.

Best for Velocity: Kim Hilbrick, Julia Stiles. Diana Usini.
