Bronx Soccer Parlour Moms, Harps advance

The champions, Harps, still hopeful to retain the league title with a semifinal victory over Fionas Saturday. Harps went close in the first half from Marie Flood and Sondra Swinburne, but Fionas played well in defense as the teams went scoreless into the break.

On 58 minutes a ball was played through to Sandra Swinburne, whose first touch made it 1-0 Harps. Fionas went close on 62 minutes, but the ball went inches wide. On 65, Harps scored on a free kick from the 35-yard-line Nancy Manferdonia. Just three minutes later, a pass by Teresa Brink was met on the head by Swinburne for the final goal.

Best for Harps: Sandra Swinburne, Chris Gallagher, Beatrice Alvarez.

Fionas: Erin Tracy, Michelle Simon, Mags Ryan.

Parlour Moms, 1 Beal Bocht 0

Parlour Moms went close with shots from Melissa Stevens, Wendy Hollender, saved by Pauline Boylan. Beal Bocht went close with shots by Mary Touhy and Sophia Harvey. On 20 minutes, a ball sent in from the Parlour Moms defense was met by Melissa Stevens, who turned and scored.

Best for Parlour Moms: Melissa Stevens, Wendy Hollender, Lisa Moore.

Beal Bocht: Michelle Ballin, Mary McEvoy, Lyn Pinezich.

J.J. Gilligans 2, Velocity 1

Gilligans started this Shield semifinal with shots on goal by Olivia Murphy and Catherine Donohue going inches wide. Velocity got into the game near the end of the first half with shots by Julia Stiles and Duffy Connolly that were well saved by Caroline Murphy.

Velocity’s Stiles, against run of play, opened her team’s account on 55 minutes. Gilligans threatened a few minutes later when Olivia Murphy’s penalty shot went just over the bar. Then, with three minutes left, Donohoe gathered the ball and buried it into the net to make it 1-1.1. It looked like going to extra time when Lupe Hernandez crossed the ball in high to the net, 2-1 to Gilligans.

Best for Gilligans: Lupe Hernandez, Germaine Enriquez, Catherine Donohue.

Velocity: Julia Stiles, Judith Stiles, Laura Amrizzo.
