Harps 1, Fiona’s 0

Cup holders Harps reached their second final in a week with a hard-fought victory over Fiona’s at the weekend. Harps struggled to find their best form, mainly due to the stifling heat. Fiona’s showed they meant business and created one of the better chances of the half when Michele Davis broke clear and hit a powerful shot toward the Harps net, but substitute keeper Miriam Peters made a fine save.

The Harps found it difficult to get any cohesion in midfield. They did create a couple of chances, one when Karen Shalvey hit the bar and Sandra Swinborne had a volley saved by the Fiona’s keeper.

Harps started the second half well, Pauline Dillon back after injury gave her team much needed encouragement. Fiona’s were always a threat with Ann Ryan giving Harps most problems. As extra time beckoned, Hilary Potkewitz picked up the ball on the right side of midfield ran forward and hit a deflected shot low into the corner of the net for what turned out to be the winning goal. Best for Harps, Una Cronin, Miriam Peters and Marie Flood.

Lansdowne 3, An Beal Bocht 0

Lansdowne got quick revenge for last week’s League defeat by scoring three against Beal Bocht. This was an excellent game with both teams playing open attractive football. Lansdowne showed they meant business from the start by attacking Beal Bocht at every opportunity. They took the lead midway through the first half when Loretta Duffy picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box and lobbed it over the Beal Bocht defense for a 1-0 lead. Beal Bocht tried to get back in the game before halftime, but their attacks were kept out by a strong Lansdowne defense.

With 15 minutes left a corner resulted in Melissa Mann scoring and putting the game beyond Beal Bocht’s reach. Karen Becker put the icing on the cake with the third goal five minutes from time. Lansdowne now meet Harps in the Cup final on July 17.
