Harps 1, Beal Bocht 0

Harps extended their lead at the top with a hard-fought win over second placed Beal Bocht. Despite an excellent start by the Harps, Beal Bocht proved most threatening in the first half, forcing six corners in 15 minutes. On one occasion some panic in the Harps defense almost resulted in the opening goal, but Maureen Ennis cleared of the line.

Harps began the second half much better. Una Cronin and Teresa Brink began to control the Harps’ defense and set up attacks for their forwards. At the other end, Beal Bocht sweeper Michele Ballin and Brenda Walsh prevented Harps taking the lead. The breakthrough came from a set piece, a corner taken by Hilary Potkewitz was met by Teresa Brink and her header went into the corner of the net. This was the decisive moment in a tough game.

Lansdowne 1, Fiona’s 0

Lansdowne picked up their second win of the season with a dominating performance over rival Fiona’s. Lansdowne created a number of chances. They almost took the lead when Trish Quinn went close with a shot. Fiona’s sweeper Marie Curran kept her team in the game with a strong performance at the back. The goal that decided the game came midway through the second half when impressive midfielder Bernadette Boyle sent a ball through to striker Catherine Russell, who finished well. Fiona’s couldn’t find a way through after that and now find themselves at the bottom of the table.

Both teams earned a point in an open match. The Parlour have only themselves to blame for a match they dominated. They attacked the Gilligan’s constantly but the forwards couldn’t get the finishing touches. Toward the end of the first half the Parlour thought they got the lead, but Karen Rice’s goal was disallowed for offside. Gilligan’s only real chance fell to Olivia Murphy, but her shot was well saved by the Parlour keeper. The final incident was a missed penalty by the Parlour.

The Parlour Moms are going to Ireland on July 28 to Aug. 5. They are looking for a goalkeeper. Anyone interested please call Maggie at (212) 866-5388.

Next week’s fixtures: Lansdowne vs. Harps, Parlour Moms vs. Southbend, and An Beal Bocht vs. Fiona’s.
