Bronx Women’s Soccer: Wins for Harps, Moms, Southbend

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Week Two of the Bronx women’s summer league paired the Queens rivals Harps and Gilligan’s. Both teams were full of confidence after impressive wins in the first week.

Gilligan’s had beaten Fiona’s the previous week, but this time fell, 1-0. The winners started the game well with some tough tackling from Theresa Doyle in midfield. Once the Harps settled down, they began to create numerous chances. Slick passing and tough tackling created good chances for the Harp forwards.

Halfway through the match Harps were awarded a penalty when the Gilligan’s sweeper handled in the box. Karen Shalvey’s shot was brilliantly saved by the Gilligans keeper. Just when things looked like they would remain scoreless at halftime, Harps took the lead. Pauline Dillon hit a high ball into the box that went over the goalie’s head into the net.

The second half saw Gilligan’s push forward more and created a few chances. They came closest to the equalizer when Maudy Lynn cracked a shot against the post. Harps keeper Maureen Ennis was very impressive with a string of fine saves that allowed her team run out winners.

Parlour Moms 2, Fiona’s 0

The second game saw last year’s league champions, Parlour Moms, overcome Fiona’s, 2-0. In a tightly fought game, the Parlour began strong creating the best chances of the two teams. They finally did score just before halftime when a Melanie Schmitt cross was turned in by Karen Rice.

In the second half, Fiona’s came back into the game in search of the equalizer. A good opportunity arrived when they were awarded a penalty. However, Robin Mierzwa (Parlour) capped a brilliant debut with a great save. Despite the disappointment Fiona’s kept pressing but were finally killed off when Celia Reiss finished off a Regina Negmann cross.

Southbend 2, Lansdowne 1

In the final game of the day, Southbend toppled Lansdowne, 2-1. Alison Lineen was player of the game in her duel role of center- forward in the first half with two goals (1 penalty) and goalkeeper second half. Lansdowne’s goal was scored by Kathy McGrail.
