Busy week for GAA

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

1 p.m., SFB, Clare vs. Mayo
Clare are the prohibitive favorites to win this division, while Mayo are just one game behind the Banner. A tough showdown should be in the offing, but I think Clare has too many weapons.

2:30 p.m., SH, Tipperary vs. Limerick
Limerick are in dire straits with only 3 points this season. They must beat their archrivals if they are to keep their season going. Tipperary, at 3-1, are in a much more comfortable position. Limerick’s desperation should give this game some additional bite.

4:30 p.m., Ladies Final, Cavan vs. Mayo
These great rivals always provide a thrilling spectacle when given the opportunity to perform at Gaelic Park. Mayo have hoisted this Cup the last two times out, but you can be sure that Cavan will do their level best to stop the Mayo three-peat.

5 p.m., SFA, Monaghan vs. Westmeath
Westmeath shocked Donegal last time out, although that result is being challenged. That is Westmeath’s only win, while Monaghan are on the edge of the playoffs with a 2-3 record. Monaghan need this bus so do Westmeath to avoid relegation at the least.

Saturday, Aug. 16, at Gaelic Park
5 p.m., SH, Kilkenny vs. Clare
Kilkenny still have playoff hopes while Clare are still looking for their first win. Look for the Cats to take it.

6:15 p.m., SFB, Offaly vs. Cork
Offaly are coming off a big win over Mayo, while Cork are playing the desperation angle. If they lose, they’re out. Offaly are the favorites and should get the job done.
