Car kills Carlow man in Bronx

A Carlow native was struck by a car and killed on Monday evening. The accident happened at approximately 8:35 p.m. at 252nd Street and Broadway in Bronx. Police say Tomas Jacobs, a pedestrian, was hit by a 1991 Toyota car. Jacobs died at the scene. The driver, Hivam Dihyem, 28, of Yonkers, was arrested for driving with a suspended license. Police say he had failed to answer a previous summons.

Jacobs, 56, was married and had grandchildren. Friends described him as a family man who was looking forward to retiring.

"He only had a few months to go before he’d be finished," a friend said.

In another accident, in Queens, the 107th precinct are investigating a incident that left a 34-year-old Cavan native with serious head injuries. Joe O’Reilly is in the intensive care unit at Mary Immaculate Hospital after his head apparently struck a moving F train at the Suthpin Boulevard and Hillside Avenue subway station.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 6, after O’Reilly exited the train at approximately 7:30 p.m.

A hospital spokesperson said that O’Reilly is responding to medication and that he should be able to move to move out of the unit later this week.

"He is gradually improving," the officaial said.
