Carey’s heroics carry Monaghan over Donegal

February 16, 2011

Monaghan 3-4, Donegal 0-5

Led by the scoring of Catherine Flood and Anita McKenna and the all-around inspirational play of Varina Carey, the Monaghan proved too strong for Donegal on a hot Sunday afternoon in Rockland.

Donegal open the game with a fine ball from Mags Dineen to full forward Amanda Lennon, who popped it over the bar. Minutes later, the same two hooked up again and Donegal suddenly enjoyed a 2-point lead.

But it was not to last. Indeed, the Monaghan women woke up and rattled the Donegal defense with goals by Flood, McKeena and Carey to take an insurmountable 7-point lead at halftime.
