Cavan and Mayo eye another championship showdown

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

12 noon, Mayo v Kerry

High flying Kerry ladies will face the might of Mayo in the first Sean Faherty semi-final at Rockland GAA pitch on Sunday next. Kerry will be pumped up for the game following their exit to Mayo at the same stage of the Annie Kearney Cup last month. Paudie Mulvihill has groomed a nice fast attacking side this summer but they lack that bit of physic and power that Cavan and Mayo have in abundance. The skill of Rosin Grogan and the panache of Mags Dineen will be tested on Sunday by staunch defending from Louise Fox and Fiona Ward. Up front Mayo will hold the sway, the McKenna sisters, Cathy and Joanne will take some watching. Ann Holland and company will have their hands full.

1:30 p.m., Cavan vs. Rockland

Cavan have trained harder than ever this summer to retain their pulpit position. Their scintillating performance in the Anne Kearney cup final was one of the best ever witnessed at Gaelic Park. Sadly there will be no Gillian Bennett on this occasion. Cavan however, have plenty of hidden talent and for once the spotlight will be put elsewhere. Nadine Doherty, Sue Bennett, Justine Clifford and the every green Ger Mahon are top class performers and are all match winners on their day, if they click on Sunday, they may run riot. Rockland are an up and coming side that has progressed more than other side in New York this season. Jenny Kirby and Kerry Ann Galvin will have to play the game of their lives if the home side have any chance of causing the upset of the century. The underdog tag will suit Rockland, it may however, take another year before they make the final.
