“Cheeky” stunt

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Vodafone, the cell phone group with a substantial share of the Irish market, apologized yesterday for unwittingly encouraging two streakers who ran on to the pitch of a Trinations rugby match wearing only the company’s logo.

The company admitted sanctioning a “cheeky” publicity stunt, but said they were unaware that streaking was involved.

Vodafone’s Australian managing director Grahame Maher said he took a call from “a guy called Brett” last week who asked if the company would back a publicity stunt, but did not go into details.

“This is not what we wanted to happen, this is not the outcome we expected,” said Maher.

The streakers ran on to the field and disrupted play until they were caught by security.

Both had the Vodafone logo and the brand name of a new mobile product painted on their bodies.
