Christmas, Irish Echo-style

Fine wine and spirits flowed like water, as the oenofiles discussed the merits of merlots and cabernets and stuff. Being in the early stages of a head cold, I was forced to choose between decongestion and intoxication – and clear sinus passages won out. I mean, I’m as rock ‘n’ roll as the next entertainment reporter, but the evils of mixing Bailey’s and Benadryl sounded too much like the premise of a cautionary “Lifetime” TV movie.
The festive atmosphere took on an authentic Irish party vibe – as one member of staff noted, the women all crowded at one table “like at an Irish disco.” (Guilty as charged!) Not to sound too stereotypical, we oohed and ahhed over pictures of Avril Ahearne’s baby, complimented each others’ outfits and discussed holiday plans. At the next table, sports writers Jay Mwamba, Peter Norton and John Manley discussed their various games, statistics, and, we assume, the newly crowned Miss World as well as other guy-type things.
