DUBLIN — Clare footballers overturned an 11-point deficit to regain the McGrath Cup with a 2-13 to 2-11 victory over Waterford in last Sunday’s final at Milltown Malbay. Tied at 2-8 after regulation time, Clare battled through in extra-time for a deserved success.
Backed by a gale-force wind, Waterford had opened up a big lead thanks to two Gary Hurney goals, but Michael O’Shea started the Clare revival with a goal and Colm Mullen kicked 0-8 including six frees.
Meanwhile, there was no joy for Leitrim in the Connacht football league last weekend when they were defeated 1-11 to 1-9 by Galway on Saturday before losing 1-6 to 0-3 to Mayo the following day.
Offaly had to overcome a strong Dublin comeback to win last Sunday’s Walsh Cup hurling tie at Parnell Park by 2-11 to 1-11, with Ger Oakley and Brian Carroll each hitting a goal, while the new Meath manager, Micheal Duignan, saw his team get off to a winning start with a 1-13 to 3-6 success against Laois.
