College Roundup: Butler hits winner for St. Thomas

He also reeled in 5 rebounds and picked up 5 personal fouls, enough to be whistled off the floor. That performance earned Butler a start in STAC’s 65-63 win over Molloy. Butler had a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) and scored the winning bucket on a jumper with 4 seconds left. He shot 6-for-15 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the line. In a 93-68 loss to New York Tech, Butler scored 5 points, shooting 1-for-6 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the foul line. He had 6 boards. His brother Paul scored 3 points for STAC, nailing his only field goal attempt, a 3-pointer. The Spartans are now 5-12 overall and 5-6 in the NYCAC.
Barry Kelleher is hitting at a 57 percent rate from the floor for Mt. Aloysius (4-7) in four games this new year. He had 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting in a 93-91 win over Pitt-Bradford. He was held to 6 points in a 97-81 loss to Penn State-Behrend, making 3 of 8 from the floor. He dropped in 10 points on 4 of 8 from the floor and 2 of 4 from the line in a 97-59 loss to Lake Erie. The 6-4 senior from Cork then rang up 19 points on 8 of 12 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the line in a 103-92 loss to LaRoche.
Middlebury’s Simon Behan had another all-around fine performance as his team defeated Connecticut College, 57-54. The Dublin senior accounted for 8 points (3 of 8 from the floor, 2 of 6 from outside the 3-point arc), 7 assists and 6 rebounds. The subsequent game, a 79-74 loss to Wesleyan, found Behan collecting 9 assists and 8 rebounds. He added 5 points, making his only attempt from long distance and converting 2 of 3 free throws. Middlebury is 5-8.
Paul Cummins scored 8 points in both of Lafayette’s games last week, losses to Lehigh, 63-55, and American, 76-74. The County Kildare freshman guard struck on 2 of 4 from the field, all from long range, in the Lehigh contest. He also converted both free throws. Against American, he had the range of 3 of 5 field goal attempts, including 2 of 4 from downcourt. The Leopards fell to 5-10.
Ian O’Boyle was high scorer with 18 points as NJIT (6-9) was trounced by Caldwell, 75-54. The freshman from Newbridge, Co. Kildare, connected on 6 of 12 field goal attempts, including 4 of 9 from 3-point territory, and both free throws. O’Boyle also hit double figures in the scoring column when he posted 11 points in an 80-78 loss to Bloomfield. He hit 4 of 12 from the floor, including 3 of 9 air mailers. He is averaging 7.9 points per game.
Colby suffered a tough 71-66 loss to Bates. Dublin junior Michael Westbrooks had 6 points for Colby (9-4), shooting 2-for-5 from the field (1-for-4 on 3-pointers) and 1-for-2 from the foul line. He also produced 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Aine O’Dwyer just missed a double-double when she racked up 9s in points and rebounds in New Jersey Institute of Technology’s 70-52 victory over Caldwell. The Killenaule, Co. Tipperary, sophomore went 3-for-5 from both the field and the foul line. She also accounted for 6 assists as NJIT improved to 5-7.
Niamh Dwyer continues to show the way at Monmouth. The Thurles, Co. Tipperary, junior was high scorer for the Hawks in their 63-59 win over LIU. She had 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the floor, including 1 of 2 from downtown, and 4 of 5 from the line. Dwyer also posted the most points in a 62-55 loss to Central Connecticut State. Her 20 points came on 8-for-21 shooting from the floor (1-for-7 from long range) and 3-for-6 on foul shots. She also had 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Dwyer leads the 6-7 Hawks with 17.0 points per game.
Emer Foley scored 8 points in 14 minutes to help Southern Mississippi defeat St. Louis, 72-64. The freshman from Bray, Co. Wicklow, was treated to 10 free throws, of which she made six. She also connected on 1 of 2 field goal attempts. Five rebounds fell her way as well. Foley then led Southern Miss (6-10) with 10 points in an 80-51 loss to Memphis. Again, she found herself at the foul line 10 times, again dropping six of those. She made 2 of 4 from the floor. She also had 6 rebounds. All this in just 14 minutes, in which she also picked up 5 fouls and a seat on the bench.
Ann-Marie Healy brought down 10 rebounds in Jacksonville State’s 69-64 loss to Longwood. The junior center from Killenaule, Co. Tipperary, scored 9 points on 3-for-13 shooting from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line. Healy also had 6 points in JSU’s 70-59 win over Tennessee-Martin. She clicked on 2 of 7 from the field and 2 of 2 from the stripe. She had 3 rebounds as the Lady Gamecocks improved to 5-7.
Laura Mullally was held to just 8 points as Dowling lost to St. Thomas Aquinas, 62-61. The senior from Athlone, Co. Westmeath, got off just 7 field goal attempts, making 3. She was also 2-for-4 from the foul line. She came down with 6 caroms. Mullally scored 14 points as the Golden Lions lost to New Haven, 62-34. She hit on 6 of 11 from the floor and 2 of 5 from the line. Dowling is now 5-7 and 5-4 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference.

SWIMMING
Dubliners Steven Manley and Mark Doyle swam 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle as Kentucky defeated Louisiana State, 138-94. Manley’s winning time of 1:38.17 was an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Doyle was along in 1:41.59. The Wildcats then continued their winning ways by whipping South Carolina, 150-93. Manley was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley, timed in 1:52.07. He also got second place in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:32.46. The winning time was 4:31.76. Doyle placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a 46.60 clocking, against a winning time of 44.25.
