College Roundup: Carlow’s Phelan wins soccer honors

The freshman from Tullow, Co. Carlow, then booted two into the net as Martin downed Alabama-Huntsville, 4-1. Martin, coached by Dublin native Paschal Dunne, is 4-0-0.
Bryan Byrne notched his first collegiate goal in California-Santa Barbara’s 2-0 win over Seton Hall. Byrne, a junior from Castledermot, Co. Kildare, scored in the 23rd minute off a through pass. UCSB is now 4-0 and ranked third in Div. I.
Keith Shevlin began the season in stylish fashion when he knocked in a header off a cross in the box in the 10th minute of overtime to propel North Carolina-Wilmington to a 2-1 victory over East Carolina. Shevlin then opened the scoring in a 2-1 win over Campbell and chipped in a goal as the Seahawks (5-1-1) defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0. Shevlin is a junior from Athlone, Co. Westmeath.
George Mason knocked off 10th-ranked St. Louis, 3-0, as keeper John O’Hara recorded three saves for the Patriots. Kilkenny senior David Quinn scored the third goal for Mason. He also scored in Mason’s previous outing, also a 3-0 victory, against Robert Morris. O’Hara, a senior from Foxford, Co. Mayo, earned the shutout. Fran O’Leary, originally from Dublin, coaches George Mason, which is now 3-2-0.
Lorcan Cronin made himself feel at home quickly with a goal and an assist in Nova Southeastern’s season opener, a 3-0 win over Northwood. The Dublin sophomore, who transferred to Nova from Wisconsin-Green Bay, later set up one goal apiece in wins over Franklin Pierce, 2-1, and Bentley, 3-1. He once again found the scoring column in a 3-1 triumph over Ouachita Baptist and assisted on another goal. Nova is 5-1-0.
Adam Shearwood put Southampton (2-3-1) ahead when he scored the first goal of the match, but Lock Haven came back with one goal in regulation and another in overtime to leave the pitch with a 2-1 win. Shearwood is a senior from Dundalk.
Lindenwood is 4-0-0 and ranked No. 2 in the NAIA. Dublin freshman James Timmons scored once in each of the Lions? victories over McKendree, 3-1, and Illinois-Springfield, 5-1.
Mercer’s Alan Colgan, a junior from Dublin, got his first goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Furman. Belfast native Tom Melville coaches Mercer, now 2-2-0.
Wingate’s Irish connection set up all three goals in a 3-0 win over the University of Charleston. Dublin freshman Robbie O’Neill was responsible for getting the ball in scoring position on the Bulldogs? first two scores, then James Lavery assisted on the third and final goal. Lavery is a freshman from Belfast. Wingate, coached by Belfast native Gary Hamill, is 4-1-1.
Paul McLaughlin scored a goal and earned an assist as Park University (6-1-0) defeated the University of St. Mary, 3-0. The sophomore from Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, was named the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week the previous week. Park is ranked ninth in the NAIA.
Greg Yelverton has three assists for North Carolina-Asheville (2-2-2) thus far in 2004. The Cork senior set up both goals in a 2-0 victory over Gardner-Webb and more recently directed a 25-yard pass to a teammate that was headed in to help defeat Radford, 3-2.
Kevin Keegan’s first start for Winthrop yielded two goals, enough to defeat IPFW, 2-1. Keegan is a junior from County Westmeath. Teammate David Garry was later named to the All-Tournament Team for his defensive play in the Kentucky Invitational, which found the Eagles losing by identical 2-1 scores to Louisville, in overtime, and Kentucky. Garry, also a junior, is from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. Winthrop is 2-3-0.
Tony Anderson, a senior from Belfast, drilled home a penalty kick for Vermont’s lone tally in a 4-1 loss to Rhode Island. The Catamounts are 2-2-1.
Neil Harrington scored the lone goal for Scranton (1-4-1) in a 4-1 loss to CCNY. Harrington is a junior from County Wicklow.
Boston College, coached by Dublin’s Ed Kelly, remained undefeated at 4-0-0 with a 2-1 victory over Boston University.
Alan Dawson’s Old Dominion Monarchs (4-0-0) have allowed only one goal through four matches. They have defeated Campbell, 1-0, Davidson, 2-0, Navy, 5-1, and Rutgers, 1-0. Dawson hails from Belfast.
San Diego played Dartmouth to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes. The Toreros, coached by Donegal native Seamus McFadden, are 2-2-1.
DeSales topped Lebanon Valley, 4-1, to move to 3-2-0. Dubliner George Crampton coaches DeSales.
Bowdoin is off to a 2-0-0 beginning after defeating Bates, 2-1, and Plymouth State, 2-0. Dublin native Brian Ainscough coaches the Polar Bears.
New York University recorded victories over Rutgers-Newark, 2-0, and St. Joseph’s (N.Y.), 2-1, before falling to William Paterson, 3-2, in two overtimes. The Violets are 2-2-1 under coach Joe Behan, a Dublin native.
A 4-1 victory over Baptist Bible has FDU-Florham at 3-2-0. Belfast’s Tom McLoughlin coaches the Devils.
Bryant College is 3-3-0 after a 5-0 win over Stonehill and a 3-2 overtime loss to Southern New Hampshire. Seamus Purcell, formerly of Dublin, coaches Bryant.
Penn State (3-0-3) remained undefeated last weekend with victories over Virginia Tech, 2-1, in overtime, and Akron, 4-0. Belfast native Barry Gorman is back at the helm of the Nittany Lions.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Jamie Campbell, a sophomore from County Antrim, got her first goal of the season as Northwest Missouri State defeated Missouri-Rolla, 2-1. The Bearcats, coached by Limerick native Tracy Cross, are 1-4-0.
Lindsey Wilson, top ranked in the NAIA, played No. 2 Azusa Pacific to a 1-1 tie on Azusa’s pitch in California. Wilson’s Debbie McGuinness, a senior from Dundalk, turned away four Azusa shots on goal.
Kelly Bailie scored a goal and assisted on another as Syracuse opened the season with a 4-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The senior from Dundonald, Co. Down, then sent a corner kick to teammate Sarah Elnicky, who headed the ball in for the first tally in a 3-0 win over St. John’s. Syracuse is 4-1-1.
Julie Kirwan scored her first goal for Slippery Rock in a 7-0 trouncing of Molloy. The County Wexford junior later assisted on another Rock goal. She then assisted on both goals in the Rock’s 2-1 overtime victory over Indiana (Pa.). Cork native Noreen Herlihy coaches Slippery Rock (6-0-1).
Leanne Bowler took her turn as the heroine in Franklin Pierce’s 4-1 victory over Assumption. The junior from Clonalvy, Co. Meath, scored the match winner in the 66th minute on a chip over the keeper. She then knocked in an insurance goal 21 seconds later on a feed from Belfast junior Laura Hislop. Hislop later added Pierce’s fourth tally. Pierce, the top-ranked Div. II team, is 5-0-0.
Hofstra downed Quinnipiac, 3-1, with Emma Kilduff scoring the Pride’s first goal. The senior from Maynooth, Co. Kildare, headed the ball in off Marie
Curtin’s corner kick. Curtin, a freshman from Limerick, also assisted on the Pride’s third goal, when she brought the ball down the pitch on a breakaway. Rebecca Wachsberger, a senior and an Irish national team veteran from East Meadow, N.Y., kept Quinnipiac from scoring. She was removed after 81 minutes with two saves. Hofstra is 5-2-1.
Lee University ran roughshod over Emmanuel College, 12-0. Belfast senior Nadine McCorry earned two assists as the Lady Flames, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, improved to 9-0-0.
Jeannie McGonagle scored on a free kick from just outside the box for one of Rocky Mountain College’s two goals in a 7-2 loss to Montana-Billings. Rocky Mountain is 2-4-0.
Belfast sophomore Kim Turner picked up her first goal of the season in Southern Mississippi’s 7-2 dusting of Arkansas-Little Rock. Southern Miss is 4-0-1.
Wingate’s Lisa Service notched her first collegiate goal in a 3-2 loss to Rollins. Service, a freshman from County Tyrone, also assisted on a goal in a 2-1 win over Lander. The Bulldogs are 5-2-0.
Triona Reilly earned an assist in Virginia Intermont’s 3-0 triumph over Geneva. Reilly is a sophomore from Dublin. VIC is 2-2-2.
Quinnipiac earned its second win of the campaign, 2-0, over Manhattan. The Bobcats (2-5-0) are coached by Dave Clarke, formerly of Donaghmede, Dublin.
Martin Methodist won its fifth match of the season by defeating Georgetown College, 2-0, then suffered its first loss of the campaign, 3-2, to North Alabama. Dubliner Gerry Cleary is in his first year at the helm of Martin’s women’s team.
Hamilton moved to 2-0 after a 1-0 shutout of Rochester Institute of Technology. The Continentals are coached by Colettte Gilligan, a native of Finglas, Dublin.
Keene State didn’t quit pouring it on in a 7-0 drubbing of Westfield State. Keene (3-2-0) is coached by Denise Lyons, a native of Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.
Portland upped its mark to 6-1-0 with victories over Alabama-Birmingham, 3-0, and Oregon State, 3-1. The Pilots are coached by Belfast’s Bill Irwin.

FIELD HOCKEY
Kent State’s Kate McGowan made a quick impression by scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over James Madison. The freshman from Portstewart, Co. Derry, later scored three times in a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth, once on an assist from her twin sister, Amy. Kate McGowan also scored Kent’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Ohio State. Kent is 2-3.

CROSS-COUNTRY
Providence won both the men’s and women’s divisions of the Fordham Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Mary Cullen, a senior from Sligo, broke the tape in the women’s race, stopping the clock in 17:26.72. Next to finish was teammate Deirdre Byrne, a senior from Avoca, Co. Wicklow, in 18:19.59. The Friars’ Roisin Quinn, a senior from Waterford, finished 30th in 19:49.91. Providence outpointed Yale, 35-51, for the team title.
The Friars’ men were led by Patrick Moulton, who won the race in 25:00.50. Martin Fagan, a junior from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, placed third in 25:30.10. Next in was Pat Guidera, a senior from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, who was caught in 25:33.03. Providence took the top five spots in the race.
High Point’s Cheryl Guiney placed 11th in the UNCW Invitational at Wilmington, N.C. Guiney, a freshman from Belfast, completed the course in 19:44. Teammate Jemissa Hess was the winner in 18:32. The Panthers took the team trophy.
