College Roundup Cronin, Grandfield win in Kenntucky

Western Kentucky’s Olga Cronin and Enda Grandfield posted victories in their respective races at the Cardinal Challenge in Louisville recently. Cronin, a sophomore from Cork, led the field home in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Her time was 10:59.89. Grandfield, a freshman from Kerry, broke the tape in the men’s 5,000 meters, with a 15:34.85 clocking. Terri

Hennessy, a junior from Cork, got second in the women’s 5,000 meters. She ran the course in 19:01.05.

Providence had three runners score in the men’s 1,500 meters at the Brown

Invitational last weekend. Hamish Thorpe led the field home in 3:52.44, with teammates Dermot Galvin (fifth in 3:59.17) and Ciaran Lynch (sixth in 4:00.66), putting points on the board for Ray Treacy’s Friars. Galvin is a junior from Kilrush, Co. Clare and Lynch is a senior from Limerick.

The Providence women came through with a victory in their 800-meter run. Roisin McGettigan, a sophomore from Wicklow, won the race in 2:11.87, with teammate Emer O’Shea picking up third in 2:15.56.

Tennis

California couldn’t handle top-ranked Stanford and the meeting led to Catherine Lynch’s only loss of the week in her three matches at third singles. She fell at fifth singles to Keiko Tokuda, 6-2, 7-6, while the Bears lost to the Cardinals, 6-1. California was back on the beam the next day, when they knocked off Arizona, 6-1. Lynch took out Perrine Pernin at fifth singles, 6-2, 7-6. The Bears then lost to Arizona State, 4-3, with Lynch coming through by defeating Mhairi Brown, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Harvard’s women beat Princeton, 5-2, with junior Jennie Timoney contributing a win at fifth singles, 6-4, 6-0, over Avanti Bhargava. Timoney hails from Celbridge, Co. Kildare.

Brown’s Nick Malone picked up a victory at second singles over Cornell’s Chris Lewis, 6-1, 6-4. The junior from Greystones, Co. Wicklow, also teamed

with Jamie Cerrefani at first doubles to defeat Mike Halperin and Stefan Paulovic, 8-5. The Bruins outscored the Big Red, 4-3.
