Tipperary, lit up the board for 31 points in an 83-78 loss to St. Francis (Pa.) in women’s basketball. Dwyer shot 9-for-14 from the floor, which included 8-for-10 from outside the 3-point arc. She also shot 5-for-8 from the foul line and took down five caroms. All in just 30 minutes. The Hawks (13-10, 9-5 Northeast Conference) recovered to win their next two games, downing LIU, 51-43, and Fairleigh Dickinson, 62-52. Dwyer was held to 11 points by LIU, shooting 3-for-8 from the floor (1-for-3 on bonus shots) and 4-for-4 from the line. She rang up 14 points against FDU, on 3-for-7 shooting from the floor (1-for-3 on 3-pointers) and 7-for-10 from the foul line. She also wreaked havoc with seven steals and six rebounds.
Quinnipiac (14-9, 11-3 Northeast Conference) is riding the crest of a four-game winning streak with senior guard Kim Fitzpatrick controlling the point. The Waterford native had one of her more prolific outings when she scored eight points in a 63-55 win over LIU. She connected on 3-for-6 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. She then scored five points in a 77-55 romp over Wagner, pulling down six boards and assisting on six buckets. Fitzpatrick then meted out eight assists in a 67-53 win over Central Connecticut State. She also had four steals and six points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor.
Laura Mullally went on a tear recently. The Dowling senior from Athlone, Co. Westmeath, hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the Golden Lions? game with Queens into overtime. When the dust cleared, Dowling had a 93-87 win and Mullally had a career-high 31 points. She threw in eight buckets from 3-point territory and had eight rebounds. A few nights later, she eclipsed that personal high with 33 points in a 78-75 loss to Concordia (N.Y.). She shot 11-for-22 from the floor (8-for-18 from midcourt) and 3-for-3 from the line. Dowling is 11-14 and 11-11 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Conor Grace grabbed a crucial offensive rebound on the back end of a 1-and-1 foul situation that enabled Davidson to defeat College of Charleston, 76-74. The Wildcats? Kenny Grant missed his second attempt with Davidson up by 3 points, but Grace fought his way to the ball and passed off to Grant, who was immediately fouled again. With 37 seconds on the game clock, Grant converted both free throws, which turned out to be needed as Charleston’s Dontaye Draper single-handedly erased the 5-point difference in the next 15 seconds. Davidson’s Jason Morton then hit a jumper with one second left on the clock to give Davidson (18-7, 14-0 Southern Conference) the victory. Grace, a senior from Dublin, finished the game with five points on 2-for-5 shooting from the floor, including 1-for-2 from long distance. He also had five rebounds, all off the offensive glass.
Playing time has been hard to come by for Jason Killeen, but that?s to be expected when you’re a freshman trying to break in with a team that’s humming along with a 20-5 record and 11-1 in the Big South Conference. However, the Limerick frosh saw eight minutes on the floor in the Eagles’ 65-55 win over Radford. He scored four points, converting one of two field goal attempts and two free throws. He also came down with two rebounds.
Mount Aloysius’ Barry Kelleher has begun shooting the ball like there’s no tomorrow, which is pretty much the case when you’re near the end of your senior year. The Corkman pitched in with 14 points in a 101-91 loss to La Roche. He shot 6-for-12 from the floor, including 2-for-2 from the outlands. His 18 minutes on the floor also saw him reach for eight rebounds. Kelleher then had a double-double in a 111-94 loss to Lake Erie. He led the Mounties (7-17) with 19 points on 5-for-13 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the line. He also had 12 caroms. Kelleher then scored 17 points in a 111-96 loss to Hilbert. He shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the floor.
Paul Cummins scored 8 points, all in the first half, to help Lafayette (8-17, 4-8 Patriot League) defeat Army, 76-73. The County Kildare freshman shot 3-for-6 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from outside the 3-point arc. He also grabbed three rebounds in his 12 minutes on the floor.
Simon Behan scored 10 points in Middlebury’s 74-72 loss to Bowdoin. The Dublin senior shot 3-for-4 from the floor and was perfect on four free throws. He also had 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
SWIMMING
Kentucky’s Steven Manley picked up a victory in a consolation heat and took fourth place in another race at the Southeastern Conference Championships at Gainesville, Fla. Manley, a junior from Dublin, finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. His time was 1:35.16 in a race won by Florida’s Darian Townsend in 1:34.41. Manley also qualified for the finals in the 500-yard freestyle, but was well off his time in the preliminaries (4:20.37) and finished a well-beaten eighth in 4:27.22. Georgia’s Sebastian Rouault set an SEC record with his time of 4:15.00. Manley later won the consolation round in the 100-yard freestyle with a 43.84 clocking. He also anchored the Wildcats? relay teams at 400 and 800 meters, both of which resulted in third-place finishes. Kentucky’s men finished fourth in the eight-team standings, which was topped by Auburn.
TRACK & FIELD
South Alabama’s Erin Kinnear, a Belfast sophomore, won the women’s pole vault at Middle Tennessee State’s Valentine Invitational with a high jump of 12 feet.
Iona’s Connollys, Sean and Rob, ran second and 10th, respectively, in the men’s mile at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Sean Connolly finished in 4:03.49, while Rob Connolly checked in at 4:41.95. Both are seniors from Dublin. Iona’s Richard Kiplagat won the race in 4:02.58.
