The Ravens, who lost in the NCAA Div. II finals last December, are off and flying with a 4-0 start. The season opener, a 3-0 defeat of Texas A&M-Commerce, found the duo accounting for a goal and an assist apiece. Next to fall was Holy Family, 6-1. Hislop, a junior from Belfast, had a hat trick and two assists, while Hughes, a junior from Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, set up Hislop on one of her scores. Newcomer Leanne Bowler, a junior from Clonalvy, Co. Meath, also put the ball into the net. Hislop then scored both Pierce goals in a 2-1 win over Southern Connecticut State. Then the Ravens, ranked No. 1 in Div. II, defeated St. Michael’s, 2-1, with Hislop and Hughes each picking up a goal and an assist.
They’re not taking any prisoners at Lee University this year. The Lady Flames are off and running at 7-0, and often scoring in the double digits. They have one 12-0 victory, one at 12-1 and a pair at 10-0. Senior midfielder Nadine McCorry of Belfast has contributed four goals and two assists thus far.
Marie Curtin earned her first collegiate goal in Hofstra’s 2-0 victory over Providence. The Limerick freshman sent the ball into the net from 25 yards
outside the left edge of the penalty box after taking a direct kick. Teammate Emma Kilduff, a senior from Kildare, has one goal and two assists thus far. Minding the goal is senior Rebecca Wachsberger, an Irish National Team veteran from East Meadow, N.Y., who has 33 saves and six goals against after seven matches. Hofstra is 4-2-1.
Rocky Mountain College opened the season with a 2-1 win over Western Baptist. Nicola Charles, a sophomore from Kildare, scored the winning goal off an assist from Roisin Mahon, a sophomore from Buncrana, Co. Donegal, who is returning after sitting out last season with a knee injury. The Battlin’ Bears then downed Evergreen State, 3-1, with the Irish duo reversing roles. Charles fed Mahon for RMC’s third goal.
Lewis University (2-4) got its first win of the season, 1-0 over Davis & Elkins, when Caroline Kenny struck off a cross just outside the box. The senior from Leixlip, Co. Kildare, then scored on a penalty kick and earned two assists in a 5-0 romp over St. Francis, Ill.
Hamilton began the season with a 5-0 win over SUNY Institute of Technology. The Continentals are coached by Colette Gilligan of Finglas, Dublin, who is back for her third year at the helm.
Denise Lyons has Keene State out of the gate at 2-2. A 3-1 win over Western New England started the season, but shutouts by Skidmore, 3-0, and Plattsburgh, 1-0, followed. The ship was righted with a 4-0 victory over Framingham State. Lyons is a native of Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.

MEN’S SOCCER
Paul McLaughlin scored all three goals for Park University in a 3-2 overtime win against Benedictine. The sophomore from Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, first found the net on a penalty kick in the 55th minute of the match. He tied the match in the 83rd minute, then directed the winning goal through the posts 13 minutes into the extra stanza. Park is now 3-1.
Cathal Brady notched his first goal of 2004 just two minutes into Lewis University’s match with Truman State and the tally stood up for the win,
1-0. Brady, a sophomore from Dublin, also has an assist thus far in the season, as does teammate Gavin Grogan, also a Dublin sophomore. The Flyers are winging at 6-0.
Junior forward Keith Shevlin gave UNC-Wilmington a victory in the season opener. Shevlin, from Athlone, Co. Westmeath, scored in the 10th minute of
overtime on a header off a cross in the box for a 2-1 win over East Carolina. Shevlin has scored twice more since then, most recently in a 3-0 win over Sacred Heart, as the Seahawks are 5-0-0.
Vermont (2-1-1) began the season on a winning note, courtesy of Tony Anderson. The Belfast senior nailed a penalty kick in the 103rd minute of the match to provide the Catamounts with a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross. Anderson then had what turned out to be the match winner in a 2-1 triumph over Central Connecticut State, scoring on a goal-line header. Teammate Danny Broughan, a sophomore from Ashbourne, Co. Meath, scored Vermont’s first goal on a pass from Ronan Keegan, a senior from Dublin.
Providence is finding the going tough early on, stumbling to an 0-3 start, but junior Eoin Lynch has been a bright spot, playing roles in the Friars’ only two goals thus far, both in a 3-2 loss to Villanova. Both goals came in a span of only 43 seconds. Lynch directed a cross to teammate Ian Wexler, who headed the ball in for a goal. Soon after, Lynch had a goal on a direct kick. Lynch, a Dublin native, now resides in Yarmouth, Maine.
