The sophomore from Kildare recorded the first tally in the third minute off a feed from Dolores Deasley, a junior from Drumkeen, Co. Donegal. Kilduff’s second goal came in the 19th minute. Kilduff is a sophomore from Co. Kildare. Hofstra is 9-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Green Mountain College’s Zelda Mooney scored a goal and assisted on another as GMC defeated Norwich, 3-0. The Dublin senior scored the first goal of the day off a crossing pass in the 15th minute. GMC didn’t score again until the 68th minute, when Mooney sent a cross to Emma Emstroem that was converted for the second score. GMC is 9-2-0.
The 2002 season has been unkind to Lewis University, now 0-10-0. The Flyers scored only their third goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan, courtesy of Caroline Kenny, a sophomore from Leixlip, Co. Kildare. Another shot on goal by Kenny, ricocheted off the left goal post.
Aisling Callaghan picked up an assist in Northern Kentucky’s 2-0 victory over St. Joseph’s (Ind.). NKU, top ranked in Div. II, is 13-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Gareth O’Sullivan’s Christian Brothers squad rose a peg to second in the Div. II rankings. The Lady Bucs improved to 13-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Gulf South play with a 4-1 victory over North Alabama. The only team standing above CBU is Northern Kentucky, which defeated CBU earlier this season. Coach O’Sullivan is a native of Ballina, Co. Mayo.
Hamilton College is 3-4-2 under Colette Gilligan’s tutelage. The past week found Hamilton shut out twice, first by Union, 1-0, then by Middlebury, 2-0. Sandwiched between was a 2-1 win over Skidmore. Gilligan is a native of Finglas, Dublin.
Keene State had a productive week, featuring triumphs over Endicott, 2-0, and Framingham State, 3-2. Keene, coached by Denise Lyons, originally from Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, is 12-2-1.
Slippery Rock and Indiana (Pa.) played to a scoreless tie last week. Slippery Rock, coached by Cork’s Noreen Herlihy, is 7-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
MEN’S SOCCER
Memphis’s John Reilly was in the nick of time as the Tigers defeated North Carolina-Wilmington, 3-2. Memphis was down, 2-0, when Reilly found the goal from the top of the penalty box in the 76th minute. Less than two minutes later, the Tigers’ keeper found Reilly on a pass. The Dublin sophomore beat the defense down the middle of the pitch and fed teammate Kirk Ricketts, who was cutting from the left side, where he finished with the tally. Reilly then notched the winning goal in the 85th minute. Memphis is 8-3-1.
Five minutes was all it took for Gary Hanly to change the course of Felician’s contest with Bridgeport. The senior from Roscommon set up the first goal in the 23rd minute and accounted for the second goal five minutes later to provide Felician (5-6-1) with a 2-1 victory.
Adelphi’s Padraiq Drew won the match with a direct kick in the 20th minute as Adelphi held off Philadelphia, 1-0. In Adelphi’s 4-0 victory over Howard, Drew fed Gary Sullivan with a cross that led to the third goal. The Panthers are 4-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference.
Rio Grande rose to the top spot in the latest NAIA poll. Rio’s latest conquests were Mount Vernon Nazarene, 2-0, and Shawnee State, 11-0. Jon Leonard, a senior from Belfast, scored the first goal against Mt. Vernon. The other goal resulted when a Leonard shot caromed off the back of a defender and into the goal. Leonard scored three times in the Shawnee blowout. Teammate Kevin McCloskey, a senior from Belfast also found the net. Leonard was honored as the Player of the Week by the American Mideast Conference for the second week in a row. Rio is 12-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league play.
Dublin native Brian Ainscough has Bowdoin College rolling along at 8-2-0 and a No. 14 ranking in Div. III. Bowdoin recently defeated Connecticut College, 2-1, before dropping a scoring fest to Wheaton (Mass.), 4-3. Bowdoin then recovered with a 2-0 shutout of Southern Maine.
Christian Brothers lifted a few eyebrows with their 3-1 victory over defending Div. II champs, Tampa. The Bucs, coached by Gareth O’Sullivan, are now 4-7-2.
Clemson, ranked fourth in Div. I, held on to defeat Virginia, 3-2, in two overtime periods. The win was the seventh straight for Trevor Adair’s Tigers, who are now 9-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Adair is from Belfast.
Wingate left the pitch with a 3-1 victory over Pfeiffer. Wingate, coached by Belfast native Gary Hamill, is 8-6-1.
New York University dropped to 8-5-1 with a 1-0 loss to Drew. Dublin native Joe Behan coaches the Violets.
CROSS-COUNTRY
High Point University’s Tommy Evans scored an easy victory at the North Carolina Collegiate Championships in Greenville, N.C. The Kilkenny senior made it in with a time of 23:53.10 for 8,000 meters. Placing third in 24:22.51 was Western Kentucky’s Enda Grandfield, a junior from Killorglin, Co. Kerry.
The women’s division saw Western Kentucky’s Olga Cronin finish fifth in 17:35.75. Heather Lee, running without affiliation, won the race in 17:10.19. Cronin is a senior from Cork.
Same location, different race: the Furman Invitational was also run in Greenville. East Tennessee State’s Peter Dalton, a freshman from Dublin, took 19th place with a time of 26:38.3. Kennesaw State’s Joseph Mutai broke the tape in 25:14.1.
GOLF
South Alabama won its second consecutive tournament when it scored a five-stroke victory over Jacksonville State in the Hillman Robbins Memorial Intercollegiate at the Club at Big Creek in Millington, Tenn. Gareth Maybin, a South Alabama sophomore from Ballydome, Co. Antrim, finished in third place, eight strokes behind teammate Ryan Gildersleeve, the medalist. Maybin shot two-over-par 218 (74-70-74).
Southeastern Louisiana placed second in the Stephen F. Austin Crown Classic at the Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, Tex. Helping their cause were Mark O’Sullivan, a Galway senior, and Mervyn Owens, a sophomore from Mallow, Co. Cork. O’Sullivan tied for 11th place at 225 (75-73-77), while Owens shared 19th place at 228 (76-75-77). Arkansas State’s Jeremiah Shields had the winning score of 218. Arkansas-Little Rock defeated Southeastern by four strokes.
Kent State’s Martina Gillen tied for seventh place in the Shoot-out at the Legends in Franklin, Ind. The Dublin junior finished five over par at 221
(74-74-73), which was nine shots behind Indiana’s Karen Dennison, the titleist. Kent won the team trophy by seven strokes.
