Niland then paced California to a 5-2 win over No. 13 Southern Cal, 5-2. He defeated Jamil Al Agba, 6-2, 7-5, and with Briaud handled Al Agba and Johan Berg, 8-6. Niland, who is ranked 16th among men by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is sure to move up this week as Pampoulov was seventh in the rankings and Al Agba was 10th.
Notre Dame’s Barry King was victorious in both singles and doubles play as the No. 32 Fighting Irish rolled Ball State, 6-1. King, a sophomore from Dublin, defeated Matt Laramore, 6-1, 6-2, at second singles and teamed with Ryan Keckley for an 8-5 win over Laramore and Brad Rhodes at second doubles. King is 113th in the ITA rankings.
Harvard’s Elsa O’Riain saw action at second doubles last week as the Crimson defeated Cornell, 6-1, and Columbia, 7-0. The Cork sophomore was paired with Courtney Bergman for an 8-2 win over Erika Takeuchi and Melissa Tu. O’Riain and Bergman later enjoyed an 8-4 victory over Columbia’s Miriam Rahali and Kara Worsley.
University of Memphis senior Mark Finnegan defeated Murray State’s Jeff Lester, 6-2, 6-2, at fourth singles as the Tigers trounced Murray, 6-0. Middle Tennessee State then roughed up Memphis, 5-1, with Finnegan going down at the five spot to Brandon Allan, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4.
San Diego’s Emma Murphy came through with a victory at first singles, although the Toreros lost to Oregon, 5-2. The Cork junior, the 30th-ranked woman on the ITA list, disposed of Daria Panova, 6-0, 6-2.
TRACK & FIELD
Iona hosted a quad meet in Pelham, N.Y., that drew Providence, Stony Brook and Quinnipiac. Providence’s Liam Reale and Martin Fagan won the men’s mile and two-mile races, respectively. Reale, a senior from Hospital, Co. Limerick, finished in 4:10.19, while Fagan, a junior from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, came home in 8:49.00. Stony Brook’s Brian Farrell, a junior from Wicklow, was fourth to Reale in 4:16.90, while Iona’s Mark Smyth, a senior from Sligo, took sixth place in Fagan’s win, with a time of 9:20.33.
Providence seniors Roisin Quinn and Mary Cullen were also winners at Iona. Quinn, from Waterford, galloped in the 600 meters, timed in 1:38.12. Cullen, of Sligo, was fastest at 3,000 meters, stopping the clock in 9:19.98.
Southern Illinois’ Joe Byrne was the victor in the men’s 1,500 meters at the Mississippi Invitational at Oxford, Miss. The junior from Downpatrick, Co. Down, broke the tape in 3:54.29.
South Alabama’s Erin Kinnear placed eighth in the women’s pole vault at the Texas Relays in Austin. The sophomore from Belfast cleared 3.5 meters on her first attempt, then knocked the bar off in her first try at 3.65 meters. She made it over on her second try and advanced to 3.80 meters, but was unsuccessful in three attempts at that height. The winning vault of 3.95 meters belonged to Wichita State’s Jackie Brown.
GOLF
Francis Marion junior Aengus McAllister had fourth place to himself in the Southeastern Collegiate at Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta, Ga. The Dubliner shot 219 (76-72-71) for 54 holes, which was three strokes over par and five behind Rollins’s. Dan Walters, who topped the leaderboard. Francis Marion tied for sixth place in the 18-team field, with Armstrong Atlantic taking the team title.
Rhode Island’s Kenneth Fahey tied for ninth place in the UNCG/Forest Oaks at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The senior from Clifden, Co. Galway, posted a 54-hole total of 222 (70-79-73), which was six strokes over par and eight off the winning score shot by Louisville’s Derek Fathauer. Louisville won the 12-team scramble, with Rhode Island placing ninth.
Gareth Shaw’s joint 22nd-place finish was highest among the four Irish competitors in the Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The East Tennessee State freshman from Lisburn, Co. Antrim, shot 230 (78-75-77), which was 14 strokes over par and 13 behind Georgia’s Chris Kirk, the medallist. Shaw’s teammate Cian McNamara, a freshman from Limerick, placed 24th at 231 (76-78-77). Minnesota’s Niall Turner, a sophomore from Cork, shared 49th place at 237 (82-76-79), while Toledo’s Ciaran McLeavey, a freshman from Banbridge, Co. Down, tied for 61st place at 240 (78-81-81). Augusta State was a one-stroke winner over Georgia, with ETSU and Minnesota among three teams lodged in fourth place, while Toledo finished 17th.
High Point’s Jenna Kinnear shared seventh place in the Draper Valley Spring Invitational at Draper Valley Country Club in Draper, Va. The Belfast sophomore’s 157 (79-78) was 13 strokes over par and nine behind Charleston Southern’s Erica Donovan, the champion. High Point finished second, four strokes behind Wofford, in the team standings.
