College roundup: Mary Cullen qualifies for NCAA 5,000 meters

Cullen, from Sligo, ran the race in 15:49.69, and was
bettered only by West Virginia’s Megan Metcalfe, who broke the tape in
15:47.64. The Friars were also represented in the 1,500 meters by senior
Deirdre Byrne, from Avoca, Co. Wicklow, who placed fifth with a 4:26.62
clocking. North Carolina’s Erin Donohue, won the race in 4:22.92.
Fifth place was also were the Friar’s Martin Fagan finished in the men’s
5,000 meters. The Mullingar, Co. Westmeath junior was clocked in 13:56.82,
while Georgetown’s Rod Koborsi was winning in 13:51.27. Iona’s Rob Connolly,
a Dublin senior, finished 22nd in 14:39.90. In the men’s 1,500, Providence
senior Liam Reale, from Hospital, Co. Limerick, also got fifth place, timed
in 3:49.74. This race went to Georgetown’s Chris Lukezic in 3:49.03.
The Mideast Regional in Bloomington, Ind., found Butler senior Thomas
Frazer checking in ninth in the men’s 5,000 meters. The Belfastman’s time
was 14:18.93. Michigan’s Nick Willis was victorious in 13:54.14. Southern
Illinois runner Joe Byrne, a senior from Downpatrick, Co. Down, finished
second in section 1 of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, but earned no
points for the Salukis. The field was split into two divisions and Byrne’s
time of 8:58.20 was 11th best overall.
The National Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Sacramento,
Calif.

COLLEGE GOLF
East Tennessee State’s Gareth Shaw, a freshman from Lisburn, Co. Antrim,
tied for 25th place in the NCAA Division I East Regional at the Country Club
of Tennessee in Nashville. At 212 (71-72-69), Shaw was one stroke under par
and 14 off the medalist, Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson. Shaw’s teammate,
Cian McNamara, shared 39th place at 215 (71-70-74). McNamara is a freshman
from Limerick. Also on the course were Rhode Island’s Kenneth Fahey, a
senior from Clifden, Co. Galway, who finished 123rd at 231 (77-79-75), and
ETSU?s Noel Kavanagh, a senior from Westport, Co. Mayo, who was 135th at 242
(81-78-83). Neither ETSU nor Rhode Island finished in the top 10, which was
required to advance to the Nationals.
In the West Regional at Stanford’s course in Palo Alto, Calif., South
Alabama freshman Johnny Caldwell from Clandeboye, Co. Down tied for 49th
place at 218 (77-72-69). Stanford’s Rob Grube led the way with a 54-hole
total of 204. South Alabama finished 18th and did not advance.
The Central Regional was played at Notre Dame’s Warren course in South
Bend, Ind., with Minnesota sophomore Niall Turner, a Corkman, finishing in
joint 72nd place at 223 (74-75-74). Augusta State’s Kalle Edberg shot 205
for medalist honors. Minnesota missed a trip to the Nationals by three
strokes.

TENNIS
University of San Diego junior Emma Murphy was eliminated from the NCAA
Division I Women’s Tennis Individual Championship in the second round by
Florida’s Jennifer Magley, 7-6, 6-4. Murphy, from Cork, advanced with a
first-round victory over William & Mary’s Megan Moulton-Levy, 6-2, 7-5.
Murphy finished the season with a 24-8 mark in singles play.
California’s Conor Niland, a junior from Limerick, was also bounced from
the Men’s Individual Championship in the second round. Niland took care of
Wake Forest’s Derrick Spice, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 64, but fell to
Harvard’s Jonathan Chu, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 32. Niland finished the
season with a 25-14 record.
