Track & Field

Western Kentucky got some top-notch performances from Cork sophomore Olga Cronin at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in New Orleans. She took second place in the women’s 5,000 meters and was third at 3,000. Cronin was edged out at the longer distance by North Texas’ Debbie Thornhill, whose winning time of 17:05.47 was four-hundredths of a second faster than Cronin’s time. The 3,000 meters was won by Arkansas-Little Rock’s Ida Nilsson in 9:43.42, with Cronin along in 9:53.35. WKU’s Terri Hennessy, a junior from Cork, also tried both races. She was fourth at 5,000 in 18:02.83, and was sixth at 3,000 in 10:22.01.

Another WKU colorbearer, senior Lisa Cronin of Cork, finished fifth at 1,500 meters with a 4:43.35 clocking. Nilsson won this race in 4:23.17 and by so doing broke the Sun Belt mark of 4:24.86 set by WKU’s Breeda Dennehy in 1993.

On the men’s side, Western Kentucky’s Enda Grandfield ran sixth in the 10,000 meters and seventh at 5,000 meters. In the longer race, the freshman from Killorglin, Co.
