Anytime Kim Fitzpatrick leads Quinnipiac in scoring, an informed guess that something is amiss would not be far wrong. The ball handler and defensive specialist paced the Bobcats (2-5) with 14 points in a 94-58 blowout loss to Harvard. The Waterford senior shot 5-for-8 from the floor, including 2-for-4 on 3-pointers, and was 2-for-5 from the foul line.
Seeing Niamh Dwyer’s name with a double-digit figure in the scoring column isn’t unusual, but the junior from Thurles, Co. Tipperary, was held below her typical output in Monmouth’s 73-44 loss to Auburn. Dwyer was effectively shut down by the Tigers, who let her attempt only seven field goals. She made three from outside the 3-point arc and one from inside, while canning 1-for-3 from the line for 12 points, high for the Hawks (4-5).
Ann-Marie Healy flipped in 7 points as Jacksonville State (2-4) defeated Carson-Newman, 86-79. She shot 3-for-5 from the floor and 1-for-2 from the line. The junior from Killenaule, Co. Tipperary, scored eight points in JSU’s 61-58 loss to Alcorn State on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor, including her only 3-point try, and 1-for-3 from the stripe.
MEN’S HOOPS
Ian O’Boyle was good for 11 points, but little good it did New Jersey Institute of Technology, losers to Bryant by an 85-47 score. O’Boyle, a freshman from Newbridge, Co. Kildare, took all but one of his nine field goal attempts from long distance, hitting three of them. He shot 2-for-3 from the foul line. He also had 3 rebounds as the Highlanders fell to 5-4.
Paul Cummins gathered four rebounds while playing backcourt in only 16 minutes on the floor as Lafayette dispatched Moravian, 73-56. Cummins, a freshman from County Kildare, also scored 3 points on 1-for-6 shooting from the floor. All but one of those attempts were from bonus territory. He also had two assists as the Leopards improved to 3-6.
Paul Butler, a junior from Ballymena, heaved six field goal attempts from 3-point range, making two, for 6 points as St. Thomas Aquinas (4-5) lost to BYU-Hawaii, 90-70.
