College Roundup: Rogan scoring for Hamilton

The sophomore from Cork now has four goals on the season for the 5-1-0 Continentals.
Conor Dawson, a sophomore midfielder from Belfast, found the goal twice in the first minutes of Rio Grande?s match with Charleston (W.V.), which Rio won, 9-1. Rio (7-0-0) is the top-ranked team in the NAIA rankings.
Memphis’ Michael Coburn, a freshman from Dundalk, headed in a corner kick for the Tigers’ first goal in a 3-1 win over UNC-Charlotte. The Tigers’ previous match resulted in a 5-1 win over Evansville, in which Dublin junior Stephen Cooling had two goals for Memphis (5-2-0), as well as an assist.
Top-ranked California-Santa Barbara shutout Cal-Riverside, 3-0. Junior Bryan Byrne, a junior from Castledermot, Co. Kildare, assisted on one of the Gauchos’ goals. UCSB is 7-0-0.
Alan Delahunty, a freshman from Waterford, accounted for a goal and an assist in Virginia Intermont’s 7-0 bashing of Brevard. VIC is 7-2-0.
Cathal Brady, a sophomore from Dublin, scored on a penalty kick as Lewis defeated Kentucky Wesleyan, 3-1. The Flyers (7-0-1) are ranked No. 2 in Div. II.
Sligo freshman Graham Lee has minded the goal for Texas A&M International in the team’s first five matches, all victories. Lee has allowed eight goals, while stopping 11 shots.
Andy Donohoe, a Dublin sophomore, set up Kentucky Wesleyan’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Southern Indiana. KWC is 3-5-1.
Damien O’Rourke scored on a header for one of George Mason’s three goals in a 5-3 loss to Seton Hall. O’Rourke is a junior from Shannon. Dubliner Fran O’Leary coaches the Patriots (3-3-0).
Neale Phelan scored Martin Methodist’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Christian Brothers. Phelan is a freshman from Tullow, Co. Carlow. Martin, coached by Dubliner Paschal Dunne, is now 4-0-1.
Greg Yelverton, a senior from Cork, assisted on UNC-Asheville’s third goal in a 3-1 victory over High Point. Asheville is 3-2-2.
Old Dominion came up with two goals in the final five minutes to defeat North Carolina, 3-2. The fourth-ranked Monarchs (5-1-1), coached by Belfast native Alan Dawson, then returned to tie American, 1-1, before losing to Hartwick, 1-0.
Trevor Adair’s Clemson Tigers split matches with Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Duke and North Carolina State, losing to Duke, 1-0, and beating State, 4-3, in overtime. Clemson is now 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the ACC. Adair is a Belfast native.
Boston College endured its first blemish of the season, losing to Villanova, 2-1. The Eagles rebounded with a 2-0 victory over Providence. B.C., coached by Dublin’s Ed Kelly, is 5-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big East.
Barry Gorman’s eighth-ranked Penn State squad stayed undefeated at 5-0-3 with wins over Tulsa, 3-2, and No. 15 Southern Methodist, 3-2, in overtime. Gorman is a Belfast man.
New York University rolled to victories over Hunter, 3-0, and Staten Island, 3-2 in two overtimes. NYU, coached by Dubliner Joe Behan, is 4-2-1.
Bowdoin defeated Colby, 2-1, then lost for the first time this season, tripped up by Southern Maine, 2-0. The Polar Bears, coached by Dubliner Brian Ainscough, are 3-1-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Susan Byrne scored the first goal of her collegiate career in St. John’s 2-0 win over Wagner. Byrne, a freshman from Dublin, knocked the ball in on a backwards header to the left post. The Red Storm is 6-2-0.
Freshman midfielder Lisa Service knocked in two goals to help Wingate (6-3-0) defeat Belmont Abbey, 6-2. Service calls County Tyrone home.
Jeannie McGonagle scored with 10 seconds left to play in the second and final overtime period to lift Rocky Mountain College to a 2-1 win over Minnesota-Morehead. McGonagle is a junior from Buncrana, Co. Donegal. RMC is 3-5-0.
Marie Gallagher scored one goal and assisted on another as Lindsey Wilson, the top-ranked NAIA team, defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 4-2. Debbie McGuinness stopped one shot in goal for Wilson (7-0-1). Wilson later held off No. 4 Lee University, 3-2, with McGuinness recording a pair of saves. Belfast senior Nadine McCorry had Lee’s second goal. Lee is now 10-1-0.
Kelly Bailie set up a goal that allowed Syracuse to draw even with No. 2 Notre Dame. But the Fighting Irish came back with a late goal of their own to down the Orange, 2-1. Bailie is a senior from Dundonald, Co. Down. Syracuse is 5-2-1.
West Georgia enjoyed the first win in program history with a 9-0 romp over Faulkner. Jackie Mulligan, a junior from Sligo, scored three times for the Braves, who are coached by Gareth O’Sullivan. The Ballina, Co. Mayo, native previously won a Div. II national championship at Christian Brothers.
Mairead McLaughlin, a senior from Derry, added a goal to Barry’s cause in a 5-0 romp over Eckerd. Barry is 3-1-0.
Rebecca Wachsberger stopped four shots in Hofstra’s 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. The senior from East Meadow, N.Y., then had 13 saves against Virginia Commonwealth, but that wasn’t enough as VCU beat the Pride, 1-0, in overtime. Wachsberger is an Irish national team veteran.
Southern Connecticut State’s Jennie McCormack, a junior from Dublin, picked up her first goal of the season on a free kick in a 3-0 win over St. Michael’s. The Owls are 5-3-1.
Laura Hislop assisted on one goal in Franklin Pierce’s 2-0 win over Stonehill. Pierce, the No. 1 team in Div. II, then outgunned American International, 7-0. Hislop scored three times and Sonya Hughes earned four assists. Juniors both, Hislop comes from Belfast and Hughes from Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. The Ravens are 7-0-0.
Jaime Campbell had Northwest Missouri’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Southwest Baptist. Campbell is a sophomore from Larne, Co. Antrim. Limerick native Tracy Cross coaches the Bearcats (2-6-0).
Triona Reilly assisted on one goal as Virginia Intermont (5-2-2) dismantled Brevard, 8-0. Reilly is a sophomore from Dublin.
Orlagh Cullen’s corner kick was converted for a goal, Sacred Heart?s only tally in a 3-1 loss to Central Connecticut State. Cullen is a junior from County Offaly. The Pioneers are now 2-6-0.
Slippery Rock defeated Lock Haven, 2-1, and California (Pa.) to improve to 8-0-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The sixth-ranked Rock is coached by Cork native Noreen Herlihy.
Colette Gilligan has Hamilton off to a 4-0-1 start. The Continentals recently defeated Hartwick, 7-0, and Union, 2-1, while playing Skidmore to a 1-1 tie. Gilligan hails from Finglas, Dublin.
After starting the season 0-4-1, the St. Mary’s (Minn.) women have turned the corner with three wins in their last four matches. They defeated Rockford, 6-1, Benedictine, 3-1, and Marian, 5-0, offset by a 4-1 loss to Augsburg. Belfast native Tony Guinn is in his first year at the helm at St. Mary’s.
Keene State bounced back from a 4-2 loss to Middlebury to defeat Western Connecticut State, 4-3. Denise Lyons, a native of Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, coaches Keene (4-3-0).
Quinnipiac split two matches last week, defeating St. Peter’s, 2-1, and falling to Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0. Dave Clarke, a native of Donaghmede, Dublin, coaches the Bobcats (3-6-0).

FIELD HOCKEY
Kent State came close to knocking off top-ranked Michigan State but ended up losing, 2-1. Freshman Kate McGowan assisted on Kent’s goal. The freshman from Portstewart, Co. Derry, put a point on the board when she scored in a 4-2 loss to No. 5 Wake Forest. Kent is 2-5.

CROSS-COUNTRY
The Providence College women won the Roy Griak Invitational at Falcon Heights, Minn. The Friars were led by Kim Smith, who completed the course in 20:10. Teammate Mary Cullen, a senior from Sligo, finished fourth in 20:48. Providence senior Deirdre Byrne, a senior from Avoca, Co. Wicklow, was 19th in 21:49.
The men’s division saw Providence take fifth place. On course for the Friars were Martin Fagan, a junior from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, who was 24th over the five-mile course in 24:57, Pat Guidera, a senior from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, who was 61st in 25:39, and Liam Reale, a senior from Hospital, Co. Limerick, who placed 160th in 28:12. Butler’s Frazer twins helped the Bulldogs finish second behind Wisconsin. Thomas Frazer finished 15th in 24:49, while John checked in 55th in 25:32. The Frazers are seniors from Belfast.
