College Roundup Wicklow’s McGettigan captures Big East mile

Providence College’s Roisin McGettigan won the women’s mile at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Wicklow junior’s time was 4:57.05. McGettigan also anchored the women’s all-Irish distance medley relay team that placed second in 11:32.90. The other runners were freshman Deirdre Byrne, from Avoca, Co. Wicklow, junior Emer O’Shea of Limerick, and freshman Mary Cullen of Sligo. O’Shea placed seventh in the 1,000 meters with a 2:56.81 clocking, while Cullen was seventh at 3,000 meters in 9:45.15. Providence finished 10th in the team standings.

The Friars’ men had freshman Liam Reale, from Hospital, Co. Limerick, in the mile, in which he ran seventh in 4:12.44. Senior Dermot Galvin, from Kilrush, Co. Clare, ran ninth in the 5,000 meters, clocked in 14:37.55. Freshman Patrick Guidera, from Clonmel, was 15th at 3,000 meters in 8:38.33. Reale also ran the second leg of the distance medley relay team that placed third in 10:03.10. The Friars finished 13th on the team list.

Galvin also was named a Big East/’ropostale Scholar-Athlete Award winner. A finance major, he will receive $2,000 toward graduate studies.

Meanwhile, Brown’s Enda Johnson finished first in the men’s mile at the Armory Invitational in New York. The senior from County Monaghan ran the distance in 4:07.32.

Tennessee’s Aoife Hearne finished second in the women’s 55 meters at the Tennessee Indoor Invitational. Her time of 7.12 was bested only by teammate Karla Marshall, who broke the tape in 6.94. Hearne is a senior from Waterford.

Iona won the men’s distance medley relay at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference indoor championships in 10:24.55. Freshman Sean Connolly, from Tallaght, Co. Dublin, anchored the team with a mile in 4:17. Connolly also finished third in the men’s mile, with a time of 4:13.03. The Gaels’ Vinny Mulvey, a senior from Ashbourne, Co. Meath, took third at 5,000 meters in 14:58.57.

Manhattan’s Karen Conway finished third in the women’s weight throw at the MAAC indoors. The Dublin freshman’s best throw was 12.88 meters. Teammate Lauren Primerano won the event with a best toss of 13.60 meters.

Men’s basketball

Gary Dredge had a double-double as Azusa Pacific defeated Concordia (Calif.), 75-54. The Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, senior scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Cougars improved to 21-5. Dredge shot 3-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the foul line. Earlier in the week, he chipped in 4 points and had 11 rebounds in a 61-60 loss to archrival Biola. Dredge is averaging 6.23 points per game and 5.96 rebounds. Azusa travels to Costa Mesa on Saturday to play Vanguard, before returning home to take on Westmont on Tuesday.

Teikyo Post’s Ronan O’Leary scored 8 points on 4-for-5 shooting in a 77-65 loss to New Haven. The Derry junior also grabbed 3 rebounds in 15 minutes. Post is 11-15.

Davidson split a pair last week, defeating Georgia Southern, 64-56, before losing to Appalachian State, 62-60. Sligo senior Michael Bree had 10 points against GSU, shooting 3-for-8 from the field and 3-for-3 from the foul line. He also had 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Dublin freshman Conor Grace added 2 points and 3 boards for Davidson. The Appalachian loss found Bree struggling. He managed only 4 points, hitting two of 10 field-goal attempts. Grace had 5 points on 2-for-3 from the floor. Davidson is 17-8 overall and 10-4 in the Southern Conference. Bree is averaging 11.1 points per game and leads the team with 117 assists and 40 steals. Grace has averaged 3.8 points per contest. The Wildcats close the regular season this Saturday in Lexington, Va., against VMI.

Simon Behan played only 15 minutes, but he finished the game leading Middlebury in points scored (with 15) in an 88-63 loss to Williams. The freshman from Dublin made four of seven from the floor and was 5-for-6 from the foul line. Behan is averaging 4.8 points per game. Middlebury is 11-13.

Emmet Donnelly had 4 points and dished out 3 assists as King’s (20-5, 10-4 MAC Freedom Conference) defeated Wilkes, 92-73. The Dublin senior shot 2-for-3 from the field.

Women’s basketball

Jacksonville State (6-16) thrashed Stetson, 101-63, with freshman Ann-Marie Healy scoring 8 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor and 2-for-3 from the line. Healy is from Killenaule, Co. Tipperary. JSU hits the road for games against Georgia State on Thursday and Campbell on Saturday.

Kim Fitzpatrick led Quinnipiac in assists, with 5, in an 81-68 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson. The Waterford freshman scored 3 points, all on free throws. Fitzpatrick then scored 6 points and had 5 assists in the Braves’ 73-69 victory over Mount St. Mary’s. She was 3-for-5 from the field and had 4 rebounds. Quinnipiac is 10-13 overall and 7-8 against Northeast Conference rivals. They play Sacred Heart at home on Thursday and travel to Central Connecticut State on Saturday.

St. Joseph’s of Philadelphia knocked off a pair of Atlantic 10 rivals last week in Rhode Island, 77-67, and Massachusetts, 73-50. St. Joe’s senior Susan Moran was high scorer in both games. She had 31 points on 8-for-10 from the floor and 15 of 18 from the foul line. She also had 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The Tullamore, Co. Offaly, product wasn’t as precise against UMass, hitting only 5-for-17 from the floor, but she was perfect on 11 free throws and finished with 21 points. She also had 10 rebounds. Moran carries per game averages of 22.4 points and 8.8 rebounds. St. Joe’s closes out the regular season with a home game against La Salle on Friday and a road contest at St. Bonaventure on Sunday.

Iona lost a pair of MAAC games, first to Manhattan, 71-60, then to Niagara, 65-61. Sophomore Michelle Fahy had 12 points for the Gaels in the Manhattan loss, making 5 of 9 from the field, including 1-for-2 from three-point territory, and 1-for-2 from the foul line. Siobhan Kilkenny played all 40 minutes for the Jaspers, hitting 4-for-8 from the floor for 8 points, as well as hauling in 5 boards. The junior from Castlebar, Co. Mayo, also had 4 assists. Against Niagara, Fahy scored 8 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Iona is 6-18 overall and 4-11 in the MAAC. Fahy is averaging 8.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. The Gaels play Marist on the road Friday, then host on Manhattan on Sunday afternoon. As for Kilkenny, she has scored at a clip of 6.8 points per game, while averaging 4.3 rebounds. She is second on the Jaspers in assists with 60. Manhattan is 14-10 overall and 9-6 in the MAAC.

Niamh Dwyer was the game’s high scorer with 17 points in McKendree’s loss to Columbia College, 69-59. Dwyer, a freshman from Thurles, Co. Tipperary, made only three of 12 shots from the floor (including 1-for-5 from long distance), but she was sent to the foul line for 11 tries, from which she converted 10. She also had 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. McKendree (15-13) then lost to Williams Baptist, 72-67, as Dwyer put 15 points and had 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists. Dwyer leads McKendree in scoring with 15.0 points per game. She is also tops in assists with 110 and steals with 94.

Kate Maher scored 4 points in Sacred Heart’s 77-58 triumph over Mount St. Mary’s. The sophomore from Waterford made 2-for-3 from the floor. The Pioneers, who are 14-9 overall and 10-4 in the Northeast Conference. After traveling to Quinnipiac on Thursday, Sacred Heart faces UMBC at home on Saturday.

Swimming

Aidan McLaughlin swam the second leg on the Cleveland State “A” team’s winning effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a dual meet against Notre Dame. The Dublin sophomore also was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke. His time was 1:58.74 in a race that was won by Notre Dame’s David Horak in 1:51.02. Cleveland’s Niall McGrane posted fourth-place finishes in both the 200-yard intermediate medley (with a time of 2:01.16) and the 200-yard breaststroke (in 2:23.06). McGrane, likewise, is a sophomore from Dublin. Notre Dame won the meet, 128-106.
