Cork take charge in 2nd half

February 16, 2011

Sligo pulled themselves back into the match and then went ahead 1-3 to 1-2 at the half on the strength of Enda Henry’s excellent goal.
Then the second half began with a 0-5 to 0-1 Cork run and Sligo were back on the ropes.
After the two previous ill-tempered football matches, this clean, hard-fought game was something of a novelty. Referee John Fitzpatrick set an authoritative tone and the players kept it clean.
Midfielder Ronan Lenihan and full forward and free taker Matt Kilroy accounted for the rest of Sligo’s first-half total while Cork got two points from Donacha Lowney, The Artist Formerly Known As Paul O’Sullivan.
After Kieran O’Shea opened the second half scoring with a Sligo point, Cork took control with 0-5 on the trot. Mahoney, midfield partner Mark Kelleher and centerback Paddy Harrington were igniting the Rebel attack. Enda Lally was also doing strong work and Brendan Wiley picked up two key points in that good Cork spell.
Sligo began their come back with an Enda Henry free and Mike Creegan made it a one-point game. Lowney responded and Henry came back with another free. Still just a point between the sides as Sligo launched one last attack. Cormac McCarthy’s crossing pass was just inches too high for a leaping Ronan Lenihan at the edge of the square.
Cork took it the other way and Lowney put the explanation point on the dramatic victory as he drove a long point high over the black spot just as the buzzer signaled game over.
