The latest killing occurred Monday morning in Limerick city, when Noel Crawford was shot dead outside his parents’ house on the day of his 40th birthday.
He is believed to have been mistaken for his brother, who has been targeted by criminals. A month ago, Crawford’s five-year-old nephew Jordan was shot and injured outside the same house.
On Tuesday, Minister for Justice Michael McDowell announced a series of measures to tackle the problem, to take effect in January.
