The Shamrocks’ early woes in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League continued last Sunday. Four days after their 5-2 defeat by New York Athletic Club in the inaugural CSL Charity Shield match at Giants Stadium, the ‘Rocks dropped to 0-3 in the league with a 2-0 loss to promotion side Fairfield/Westchester in Connecticut.

"They beat our off-side trap twice, (then) we just couldn’t put the ball away," said Shamrock coach Dermot Clarke. "The lads are still in good form."

Fairfield, who struck through Steve Marcinokowitz (20th) and Matt

Della Croce (43rd), seemed to agree with Clarke’s latter assertion.

"Shamrock are a tough team," said Fairfield’s Gary Megennis. "They played hard for 90 minutes.

The loss left Shamrock at the foot of the 10-club First Division. But there was some consolation in their reserves’ 2-0 win over the Fairfield second team, — Kevin Brennan and Owen O’Sullivan scored — and the Shamrock Third Division side’s romp, by the same margin, over CD Iberia at Randalls Island. Phil Fillipio got both goals.

That aside, it was a bad day all round for the CSL’s Irish contingent with defeats for St. Barnabas, Second Division Lansdowne A.C. and Astoria Gaels, as well as the Ronan Downs coached defending champs, NYAC.

Saints whacked

Saint Barnabas slumped to their first defeat of the season, after a win and a tie, going down 4-2 to New York Croatia at SUNY-Purchase.

Rich Webb’s hat-trick sunk the Saints, who kept it competitive with goals by Ronan Frawley (35th) and Mick Hennessy (82nd). Donald Barbot was the other

Croatia scorer.

"They deserved it. They scored some great goals," the Saints’ Aidan Dennis conceded. Jack Hogan and C.J. Doherty (two) tallied in a 3-0 win for the St. Barnabas reserves.

Valiant in defeat

"A valiant display by a depleted team," is how coach Ronan Downs summed up NYAC’s 3-1 capitulation to Polonia S.C. at Travers Island. NYAC led at the interval on Rejji Hayes’ goal off a Matt Roberti corner (20th), but couldn’t keep up with the visitors in a torrid second half, during which the Poles hit back three times.

"We’re down but not out," said Downs, whose men dropped their second

straight match. "We’ll regroup. That’s our tradition," the Dubliner added.

NYAC’s reserves prevailed 3-1.

Lansdowne edged

Homenetmen kept Lansdowne winless after two weeks in Div. Two, edging the Bronx Irishmen 3-2 at Randalls Island on goals by Masis Tamazian (10th, 50th) and Khatchik Unanyan (70th).

Brian Adams (30th) and Stephen Cassidy (80th) replied for Lansdowne whose reserves showed up late.

Astoria Gaels, meanwhile, continue to struggle in the Second Division after their move from the Third. Gaels were blown out again, 4-0 this time, by Nag’s Head United at McCarran Park.

Steven Lester (25th), Scott Robinson (60th, 70th) and Nick Shearer (65th) were Nag’s marksmen. The reserve game ended 1-all tie.

Frontrunners

Argentine ace Marcelo Sanchez notched his sixth goal in three matches as New York Dinamo pipped Banatul 3-2 to preserve their perfect record and their lead (9 points) in the First Division.

Sanchez (50th), and Mured Ibrahimov (75th, 77th) turned the match around for Dinamo after Claudio (35th) had shot Banatul ahead. Jeremy Milin (85th) got the other goal for Banatul, who finished with ten men.

"I didn’t expect them to be that good," Dinamo player-coach Kristo Curanovic said. Dinamo’s reserves triumphed 4-3.

Also in the First Division, New York Hungaria picked up their first win in three tries, trouncing New York Albanians 4-0 in Woodbridge. Joe Fulop (25th, penalty), Csaba Molner (40th), and Jeffrey Saunders (69th, 84th) were on target.

The Hungaria reserves run off 3-0 winners.

Romanian romp

Adrian Ionete (15th, 35th pen.), Robert Nicole (25th), and Sebastian Lazar (80th), lifted Ripensia-Romania past Clarkstown S.C. 4-3 in Div. Two, but Romanian players also accounted for two of the visitors’ goals.

"We were lucky to lose only by a 4-3 margin, because they scored two own goals," Clarkstown’s Kevin Leitner noted. Danny McNulty (60th) accounted

for Clarkstown’s other goal.

In other Second Division action, CD Iberia dispatched New York Wanderers 3-0 at McCarran Park on strikes by Rene (15th, 65th) and Juan Carlos Fontaneda (20th): while Manhattan Kickers registered their first victory, 1-0 over S.C. Eintracht, courtesy of Pat Holmes’s 38th-minute effort.

Ukrainian S.C. coach Steve Kovalenko, who’s 54, entered the fray for his shorthanded side in a 3-2 loss to Barnstonworth Rovers at Roosevelt Island in which Michel D’Sousa (50th) and Valentine Kovalenko (75th) connected.

And at Germania Park in Poughkeepsie, Keith Fowler (25th), John Mielakas (75th), and Jason Durand (85th) earned B.W. Poughkeepsie a 3-3 with Koha, while Bergen Kickers and Concord Sporting Club drew 0-0 at Overpeck

County Park.

Third Division

Cim Sahin’s hat-trick swept Sunnyside Genclik past Turkish rival Anatolia 3-1 at Red Hook.

Jam’s had a goal from defender Katusya Morishita (30th) in their 3-1 defeat by Chile FC. Fenerbahce also lost 3-1 to Jersey City FC, despite Ali’s strike.

They were also wins for Guyana Juniors over S.I.C.J.A (3-0), Ridgewood over Krimean Turkish (8-0) and Central Park Rangers over B.W. Gottschee (2-0).

Over-30 division

In-form G.H. Metros knocked off Fairfield/Westchester United 3-0 on goals by Rigo Berco (55th), Steve Bodden (65th) and Guyla Hegyi (75th).

Fernando Sanagua (two) and Daniel Yeung starred for S.C. Eintracht, who posted a rare win in the CSL. Eintracht beat New York Greek-American Atlas 3-1.

Andreas Britz (10th), Andy Depergola (penalty), Carlos Araujo (55th) and Pablo Perez (65th, 75th) also came up big for B.W. Gottschee in their 5-1 rout of Serbia. Pihomir Lukic (42nd) got Serbia’s consolation goal.

At Canarsie Beach Park, Yeon Williams and Junior led Guyana Veterans 2-1 over New York Pancyprians, who replied through Mario. Pele Masters pipped NYAC 1-0, while Scala Brasil shutout Banatul 3-0 in other "B" Division results.
