Fr. Finucane, a Limerick native who was a regular visitor to the U.S., where Concern also has offices, had been battling cancer.
A member of the Holy Ghost order, Finucane worked in Biafra during the civil war in the late 1960s. He became chief executive of Concern in 1981.
Concern Worldwide’s current chief executive, Tom Arnold, called Finucane an inspirational leader whose work had saved countless lives.
“There can be few Irish people of his generation, or of any other generation, who have contributed as much to improving the lives of so much of humanity,” Arnold said.
Finucane retired from his executive role in 1997, but continued working with Concern as its honorary president.
