Harps 4, Beal Bocht 0

The Bronx women’s soccer champions, Harps, started the league on a winning note at the weekend. The game was tight for the first 20 minutes, then the Harps started to pile the pressure on the Beal Bocht defense.

Twenty-five minutes into the game, Jennifer Terranova crossed a ball in and Miriam Peters hassled the Beal Bocht defense, Brenda Walsh trying to clear the ball, but it went in for a goal.

The Harps kept piling on the pressure and on 30 minutes Beal Bocht cleared the line and Una Cronin held the ball and kicked it back in and Sandra Swinbyrne ran on the ball, kicked first time and buried it into the back of the net, which left the score 2-0 Harps at the half.

The second half started with the Harps piling on pressure. On 40 minutes, a throw-in from Harps led to a Beal Bocht clearance. Teresa Brink latched on to the ball from 20 yards to bury it to top left corner of net. An Beal Bocht tried to get back into the game but with some excellent saves from Chris Gallagher halted them.

It was a very tight game. It was a good start for the new team, Velocity, who only played the first game together on Sunday. Fagans started well with lots of pressure on the Velocity defense, who held up well with some good saves from keeper Kim Hilbrick. But on 30 minutes Fagans cracked the Velocity defense. A cross from Cabrini Kerrigan met Debbie Murphy, who put the ball into the net.

In the second half, Velocity came close a few times. Fagans could have scored a lot more only for some excellent saves from the Velocity keeper.

Best for Fagans: Kathy Galvin, Alison Leyden, Cabrini Kerrigan, Debbie Murphy, Michelle Doherty.

Best for Velocity: Kim Kilbrick, Storm Taliaferrow, Patricia Barrett, Julia Stiles, Cuinta Silva.

Parlour Moms 2, Gilligans 1

A good start for Parlour Moms on a 2-1 win. A tight game all around, Parlour Mums started to pressure the Gilligans defense. On the 13th minute, a cross was met by Melanie Schmidt, who put the ball into the Gilligans net, leaving the score 1-0 to Parlour Moms. Then, on 28 minutes, a throw-in by Parlour Moms was met by Melissa Stevens, who put the ball into the net.

The start of the second half saw Gilligans pressing forward and rewarded with a goal: a cross from Jackie Wrosch was met by Theresa Doyle, who buried the ball into the top right of Parlour Moms’ net. It made for an interesting final 15 minutes, but the Parlour Moms defense held out.

Best for Parlour Moms: Melanie Schmidt, Melissa Stevens.

Best for Gilligans: Maudy Lynn, Theresa Doyle, Catherine Donoghue, Sheila Lynott.

The Lansdowne vs Fionas game was called off as Fionas did not show up, so points went to Lansdowne.
