The DUP’s Gregory Campbell said that the move was “blatantly sectarian” and “shamelessly divisive.”
O’Hagan, who will propose a motion at the next city council meeting, said that it is time to “bring an end to the never-ending confusion surrounding the name of Derry City.”
Campbell’s response was forthright: “It seems they are hell-bent on underscoring the reality that Londonderry is a cold place for Protestants.
“Have Londonderry unionists not been alienated enough? Have enough unionists not been driven out of this city? I can only view this motion as a means and mechanism to finish the process of driving yet more Protestants out of Londonderry.”
The leader of the SDLP on the city council, Pat Ramsey, said that, while he personally referred to the name of the city as “Derry,” he respected other people’s right to call it either “Londonderry” or “Doire.”
