The singer, who shot to fame when Eminem sampled her single ?Thankyou? for his monster smash, ?Stan,? may have disqualified herself — be listing her nationality as Irish.
The singer, whose real name is Florian Cloud Debounvialle Armstrong — anyone wondering why she chose ?Dido?? — was born in England and holds a British passport. But documents filed by her music company, Carthage Touring Ltd., list her nationality as Irish ?- a big no-no at the Brit Awards. Though Dido won the top female award and best album at the Brits in 2002, the new information could leave her out in the cold.
If she does find herself on the outside looking in this year, Dido will be in good company. Among the other acts ineligible for Brit awards are the Corrs, the Thrills, and Westlife. U2 eventually got a look in, but it was a bit of a stretch. They won for their Outstanding Achievement to British Music. And, of course, the Wolfe Tones won for ?A Nation Once Again,? which helpfully chronicled 800 years of oppression. (Oh, wait -? that last one was just a dream. Darn.)
