The council’s anti-litter department has been issuing fines to banks around the city and some machines now only offer electronic balances.
A spokesperson for AIB said that 15 of its ATMs around O’Connell Street, Temple Bar, Dame Street and Grafton Street no longer issue receipts due to environmental concerns raised by the authorities.
Planning permission for new machines in the city now requires that machines do not issues paper receipts, he added.
Ulster Bank is looking at the issuing of receipts, with a view to getting a balance between the environment and customer needs. Bank of Ireland said that all machines issue receipts at present.
A spokesperson for Dublin City Council’s waste management division said that banks had been receiving numerous fines for ATM-related litter in recent years.
