Pick up any Irish newspaper and you could be forgiven for thinking that the only news in Ireland is concerned with public tribunals. Listen to the radio, watch the TV and you will be convinced that we have gone tribunal mad.

Why, even the Vincent Browne nightly radio show employs actors to read the transcripts, simulating the lawyers and witnesses for dramatic effect.

It’s quite good too, although it is hardly likely to push "Father Ted" or "Coronation Street" out of the ratings.

Gerry Adams and other key players in the Northern peace process must be slightly muffed by it all. On the other hand, they might be very pleased that many of Ireland’s journalists are confined within the gates of Dublin Castle.
